The allegorical float parade in the heart of Villamagna
The Villamagna Carnival is one of the most cherished festivals in Villamagna, a small hillside town in the Province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Organized by the Pro Loco Villamagna with the support of the municipal administration and numerous local associations, it is an event deeply rooted in the community: since the 1980s, the village streets have been filled with floats and carts on Carnival day, and the tradition has continued unbroken ever since.
The heart of the event is the allegorical float parade, crafted with passion and ingenuity by groups of friends and local associations. The floats take shape over several weeks in the town's warehouses, and on the day of the festival, they parade through the streets of the historic center amidst confetti, streamers, and masks. Each float tells a different story, ranging from great cinema and television classics to current pop culture icons, all with that distinct Abruzzese flair for self-irony and shared celebration.
The parade is accompanied by music, singing, and traditional square dances, where anyone can join the procession—there are no spectators, only participants. Along the route, there is no shortage of food stalls and food trucks offering local specialties and seasonal sweets. The festivities continue until the evening, transforming the village into a massive open-air party.
The Villamagna Carnival is part of the regional calendar «Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo» promoted by UNPLI Abruzzo, which brings together dozens of events across the region every year. The organizers like to remind visitors that while they may not have the economic resources of larger events, they make up for it with passion and creativity: admission is always free and participation is open to everyone. It is precisely this community spirit that makes the Villamagna Carnival an authentic opportunity to discover an Abruzzese village in its most festive guise.
The 2026 edition opened on Sunday, February 15, from 3 PM to 8 PM, with the grand parade of allegorical floats along the streets of the historic center of Villamagna, in the Province of Chieti. The procession, which departed from the local winery square, was repeated on Shrove Tuesday, February 17.
There were nine allegorical floats, created by groups of friends and local associations, with themes drawn from cinema, music, and pop culture: The Lord of the Rings, Sister Act, Willy Wonka, The Wonderful World of Bees, a tribute to Raffaella Carrà, the Love Float, Huntrix K-pop and Saja Boys, Mistery Box, and Ghostbusters.
