Corpus Domini floral carpets along Corso San Marco
The Villafrati Flower Festival is one of the most evocative events in the spring calendar of the province of Palermo. Every year, coinciding with the solemnity of Corpus Domini, the village of Villafrati, in Sicily, is covered in a long floral carpet that turns its streets into an open-air art gallery. These floral paintings, created exclusively with natural elements such as petals, leaves, salt, sand, and earth, take shape along Corso San Marco, stretching from the Chiesa del Collegio to the entrance of Palazzo Filangeri.
The heart of the festival is the night between Saturday and Sunday: citizens of all ages, local artists, and community groups work side by side to compose, petal by petal, the grand designs that will greet visitors in the morning. It is a communal ritual that weaves together faith, creativity, and a sense of belonging, where the fragility of the flowers gives life to visually stunning works destined to last only a few hours.
Born as a gesture of profound devotion, the festival has taken on a strong secular and civic component over the years, becoming a true celebration of local identity. Alongside traditional religious motifs, the floral carpets tell stories of contemporary themes such as peace, environmental conservation, the appreciation of Sicilian roots, and civic engagement. On Sunday, the completed carpets provide the backdrop for the solemn Corpus Domini procession as it travels along the flower-lined street.
The festival is now part of the broader Villafrati Village of Theatres project, funded by the PNRR, which aims at the cultural, social, and tourist regeneration of the municipality through events, workshops, show cooking, and landscape enhancement paths. The event is organized by the Confraternita SS. Sacramento and the Parrocchia SS. Trinitร , with the patronage and support of the Municipality of Villafrati.
For visitors, photography enthusiasts, and the curious, the Villafrati Flower Festival is a sensory experience that combines floral art with genuine Sicilian hospitality. A stop in the heart of the province of Palermo to admire ephemeral works of rare beauty and breathe in the authentic atmosphere of a village that, for one weekend, dresses itself entirely in flowers.
The sixteenth edition of the Villafrati Flower Festival is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, 2026, in Villafrati, in the province of Palermo. On Saturday night, citizens, artists, and local associations compose the large floral paintings along Corso San Marco, from the Chiesa del Collegio to Palazzo Filangeri. On the evening of June 13, a free folk music concert with entertainment for all ages will be held in Piazza Umberto I.
On Sunday, June 14, the completed carpets can be admired from the morning and will provide the backdrop for the Corpus Domini procession. The 2026 themes combine traditional religious imagery with current topics such as peace, environmental conservation, the appreciation of Sicilian roots, and civic engagement.
Villafrati is located in the hinterland of the province of Palermo, along the SS121. By car from Palermo, it takes about 40 minutes via the A19 / SS121. The floral carpets are laid out along Corso San Marco, in the town center.
The event and the Saturday evening concert in Piazza Umberto I are free of charge.
The floral paintings are visible from Sunday morning; arriving in the late morning allows you to admire the completed carpets before the Corpus Domini procession.
