The Apulian leg of the national sailing circuit at Marina di Brindisi
The VELA Cup Puglia is the Apulian stage of the national sailing circuit conceived and promoted by Giornale della Vela, which has been Italy's most attended regatta series for years. Set at Marina di Brindisi, in the municipality of Brindisi, Puglia, the event transforms the tourist port and the waters of Salento into a major gathering for enthusiasts, where competition and camaraderie go hand in hand.
The VELA Cup format is designed to be inclusive and bureaucracy-free: boats of all types and levels can participate, from cruising yachts to high-performance sport boats, and even classic vessels over twenty-five years old. Hulls are divided into categories by rig type and classes by length, ensuring that every crew can compete against similar boats.
The event is a coastal regatta of approximately 13 miles. The start is set north of the Puntariso Dam, outside the port of Brindisi; the fleet then heads toward the buoy near Punta Penne-Punta del Serrone, continues along the coast to the second buoy near the Torre Guaceto Marine Protected Area, and finally returns to the starting line. A setting that combines sporting challenge with the beauty of the Brindisi coastline.
The VELA Cup is more than just a competition: at the end of the race, crews gather for the grand prize-giving party, featuring food & beverage, official gadgets, and a long list of awards. Prizes are planned for various categories and classes, including commemorative cups and special recognition for the youngest and most experienced crews, as well as a cash prize for the overall winner of the leg in corrected time.
Thanks to the collaboration between Marina di Brindisi, the Circolo della Vela Brindisi, and the Lega Navale Italiana Brindisi section, this Apulian leg has become a fixed appointment in the spring sailing calendar. For the city and the entire Province of Brindisi, it represents an opportunity to promote the territory and maritime culture, attracting crews from all over Puglia and beyond.
The Apulian leg of the VELA Cup 2026 was held at Marina di Brindisi over the weekend of May 29-30, with the race taking place on Saturday, May 30. After the briefing scheduled around 8:30-9:00 AM, the fleet set off around 11:00 AM to tackle the usual 13-mile coastal route, starting north of the Puntariso Dam, with a buoy at Punta Penne-Punta del Serrone and a turn near the Torre Guaceto Marine Protected Area.
As per the tradition of the circuit organized by Giornale della Vela, the day concluded with the prize-giving party: rankings divided by category and length, commemorative cups, recognition for the youngest and most experienced crews, and a 1,000 euro cash prize for the overall winner in corrected time. The leg was organized in partnership with Marina di Brindisi, the Circolo della Vela Brindisi, and the Lega Navale Italiana Brindisi section.
Marina di Brindisi is located at Via Amerigo Vespucci 2, on the outer side of the port of Brindisi. By car, it can be reached via the SS379 and SS16 roads; Brindisi-Salento Airport is just a few kilometers away, while the Brindisi train station is connected to the city center and the port.
Participation in the regatta requires registration: the fee varies based on the boat's length (approximately 35 euros up to 10 meters, 55 euros from 10 to 14 meters, 75 euros over 14 meters) and includes free mooring for boats arriving from outside the area, crew accident insurance, an official t-shirt, a gift bag, and access to the prize-giving party. The public can watch for free from the quay.
