The summer cultural festival at the Castello Dentice di Frasso in Carovigno
When the Salento sun begins to warm the white stones of Puglia, the Castello Dentice di Frasso in Carovigno, in the Province of Brindisi, takes on a new look. With the arrival of summer, the manor adopts extended hours and opens its doors in the evening, bringing to life the Summer Evenings at the Castle festival: a calendar of cultural events that accompanies residents and visitors throughout July, August, and September. This is the moment when the castle ceases to be just a monument to admire and becomes a living stage, amidst illuminated courtyards, walkways, and frescoed halls.
The festival is promoted by the Le Colonne Association, which has managed the Castello Dentice di Frasso since 2018 in collaboration with the Municipality of Carovigno. The goal is to enhance the town's historical heritage by offering an experience that combines art, memory, and entertainment, suitable for history buffs and families with children alike.
The heart of Summer Evenings at the Castle is a blend of different languages. Each edition hosts contemporary art exhibitions set up within the ancient walls, in a suggestive dialogue between modern works and centuries-old architecture. Alongside the exhibitions, there are themed guided tours, often in a nocturnal version, which tell stories, legends, and mysteries linked to the castle and its noble families.
The visit can be done independently with an audio guide in five languages or accompanied by qualified guides from the Le Colonne Association.
A symbol of Carovigno, the Castello Dentice di Frasso dominates the historic center with its imposing silhouette. Born as a defensive structure and transformed over the centuries into a noble residence, the castle preserves rooms that tell the story of its transition from a fortress to a stately home. Inside, there is also a collection dedicated to the arts and popular traditions of the area, making the visit a journey into the material culture of the Brindisi Salento.
Carovigno is a white village in Puglia overlooking the Adriatic, famous for the nearby Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve and the tradition of the 'Nzegna, the flag-waving ceremony held during the patronal feast. Visiting the castle during Summer Evenings at the Castle means adding a cultural stop to an itinerary made of crystal-clear sea, ancient olive trees, and Salento cuisine, just a few kilometers from Ostuni and Brindisi.
