A delicious trek through the paths of Veglio, tracing the history of the local Gargotte
The Veglio Food and Wine Walks combine the pleasure of hiking with the delights of fine dining in the small town of Veglio, perched in the mountains of the Province of Biella, Piedmont. The concept is simple and irresistible: walk about five kilometers through the village streets and mountain paths, stopping at each stage to enjoy a unique dish paired with a specially selected wine. This format transforms a simple stroll into a slow, convivial experience deeply rooted in the local culture.
The theme of this event is the memory of the Gargotte, a piece of popular history in Veglio. These were neighborhood social clubs scattered throughout the village, active until the late 1990s, where members would gather after work or on weekends. They were places to buy bulk wineโoften sourced from the Cuneo or Monferrato areasโwhich was then resold and consumed on-site. Today, only one Gargotta remains active in Veglio: the Circolo Familiare Botto in the Botto hamlet, a guardian of an atmosphere that many locals still remember with affection. The walk retraces the locations where these taverns once stood, weaving together stories, anecdotes, and entertainment.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Veglio in collaboration with DocBi and the Circolo Familiare Botto, under the patronage of the Municipality of Veglio. The Pro Loco keeps the village life vibrant all year round, from the patronal feasts of San Giovanni and San Dionisio to the Veglio Carnival, and with these walks, they have revived a highly anticipated food and wine tradition after a few years of hiatus.
Departures are organized in guided groups, staggered according to the number of participants, to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone. Between one stop and the next, let the trails guide you as you chat, discover the Biella mountain landscape, and taste specialties prepared by local volunteers. It is an authentic way to get to know Veglio, its community, and its flavors, far from mass tourism and immersed in the hospitality of a Piedmontese village.
After a few years of hiatus, the Pro Loco of Veglio brought back the food and wine walks with an edition dedicated to the Merenda Cinoira delle Gargotte, organized together with DocBi and the Circolo Familiare Botto, under the patronage of the Municipality of Veglio. The meeting point was Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 4:00 PM in Piazza della Chiesa, with staggered guided group departures. Along the approximately five-kilometer route, walkers retraced the spots where the Gargotte once stood, accompanied by stories and entertainment.
At each stage, a different wine accompanies the dishes served along the 5 km route through the village streets and trails, following the footsteps of the historic Gargotte.
The highlight is the Merenda Cinoira delle Gargotte: a celebration, stage by stage, of the neighborhood taverns that enlivened Veglio until the 1990s. Don't miss the polenta concia stage and the finale with dessert, coffee, and digestif.
Meeting point at Piazza della Chiesa in Veglio (BI), Piedmont. The route covers approximately 5 km through the village streets and trails, with staggered guided group departures.
Veglio is located about 8 km from Biella and 70 km from Turin, in the Biella mountains. It is accessible by car from Valle Mosso; arriving by car is recommended due to the village's location.
