About Vegetable Garden Festival

Every summer, the Sagra dell'Orto in Paternopoli celebrates the rural heritage of Irpinia. Over two evenings, food and wine stalls showcase vegetables grown in the local countryside—from broccolo aprilatico to peppers, potatoes, and eggplants—transformed into traditional dishes and paired with Taurasi wines. Folk music, dancing, DJ sets, and a tractor rally round out this festival organized by the Pro Loco in the town center, in the province of Avellino.

A festival truly born from the garden

The Vegetable Garden Festival (Sagra dell'Orto) is the late-summer highlight in Paternopoli, a town of just over two thousand residents in the province of Avellino, dedicated to the bounty of its own gardens. This is no staged event; it is born from the daily labor of local families, where tending the land remains a way of life, translated into two evenings of tastings, music, and gatherings in the heart of this Campania village.

The 2025 edition took place on August 22nd and 23rd in Piazzetta Giardino, with stalls opening at 7:00 PM and a program blending conferences, local cuisine, and entertainment. The formula remains consistent year after year, always in the second half of August, when the village fills with visitors from neighboring towns and locals returning for their holidays.

The flavors of the Irpinian garden

The heart of the festival lies in the food and wine stalls, where vegetables harvested from the surrounding countryside are prepared according to traditional rural recipes. Highlights include:

  • Broccolo aprilatico, a local variety harvested in spring, sweeter and more delicate than friariello;
  • peppers with thick flesh, potatoes, eggplants, and tomatoes grown on-site;
  • peasant dishes revisited with a gourmet touch, from zucchini flowers to fried vegetables;
  • cheeses and cured meats from Irpinian producers with their own stalls.

The dishes are paired with local wines: Paternopoli is part of the production area for Taurasi DOCG, the great red wine made from Aglianico grapes that has made high Irpinia famous, alongside other denominations of the Calore Valley.

Folk music, dancing, and a tractor rally

Every evening, after the stalls open, the square turns into a stage. Recent editions have featured Irpinian folk music groups and ballroom dance bands, followed late at night by DJ sets that keep the party going until dawn. You will find tarantellas, pizziche, and tammurriate—the musical language through which this part of Campania tells its story.

A new feature in 2025 was the first agricultural tractor rally, with vintage and modern vehicles parading on the morning of the second day: a direct way to showcase how field work has evolved without losing touch with the past. The festival also hosts moments of reflection, such as the conference on regional promotion that opened the 2025 event in the council chamber, as well as public cooking workshops.

Paternopoli, a town that lives off the land

Nestled at about 480 meters above sea level between the Calore and Fredane valleys, the Municipality of Paternopoli retains a strong rural identity, preserved in its museum dedicated to peasant civilization, which houses agricultural tools and domestic objects from the past. The town's calendar is marked by other traditions well-known in Irpinia, from the carnival with its allegorical floats to the Easter Notte del Lauro.

The Sagra dell'Orto fits perfectly into this fabric: it is not just a village party, but also a promotional opportunity for local farms and dairies, which join the Pro Loco every year with their own stalls and products.

How the festival works

The event is centered in Piazzetta Giardino and the historic center, which are easily walkable. Stalls generally open at 7:00 PM, and the evening continues with live music. Entry to the festival area is free: you only pay for what you choose to taste, with portions designed for wandering between stalls and trying multiple dishes.

As this is an evening festival in late August in a hill town, it is wise to pack a light jacket: after sunset, the temperature drops significantly compared to the plains.

However, the festival has been a recurring event in the town's summer calendar for years, with editions documented in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
