The September festival celebrating the "petacchia", the mountain potato of the upper Aniene Valley

At the end of summer, as the woods of the Monti Simbruini begin to turn autumnal, the small village of Vallepietra in the Lazio region dedicates an evening of celebration to the most precious fruit of its fields: the mountain potato. The Potato Festival, which reached its eighteenth edition in September 2025, is one of the most cherished gastronomic events in the upper Aniene Valley, drawing visitors every year from neighboring towns, Subiaco, and the capital.
In Vallepietra, the potato is known as petacchia: a yellow-fleshed tuber, compact and firm, grown in local gardens and fields using traditional methods without chemical fertilizers, "just as our grandparents did." It is the perfect potato for gnocchi, delicious stewed with local sausages, or simply boiled and seasoned with mountain wild mint. Along with the "fagiolone" bean, a staple of local gastronomy, the petacchia tells the story of the farming heritage of this remote corner of Lazio: during the war, potatoes and beans were the primary source of sustenance for the village families.
The heart of the festival is the grand dinner in Piazza Italia, usually held on a Saturday evening in September starting at 8:00 PM. The menu, entirely built around the potato, features:
Everyone dines together at tables set up in the village's main square, in an atmosphere of authentic local festivity, far from the mass tourism circuits.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Vallepietra together with the Pro Loco, with the support of the Lazio Region and ARSIAL, the regional agency for agricultural development and innovation. It is one of the village's two major festivals, alongside the Fagiolone Festival dedicated to the other signature product grown along the banks of the Simbrivio river.
Vallepietra is one of the most isolated and evocative villages in Lazio: a few dozen permanent residents, a cluster of stone houses perched at over 800 meters above sea level in the heart of the Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park. The village is known throughout Italy for the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Trinity, a destination for centuries-old pilgrimages nestled in the rock of Mount Autore. The September festival is the ideal opportunity to discover this landscape of beech forests, springs, and high-altitude pastures, where the cuisine remains the genuine fare of the Apennine mountains.
For those seeking the true flavors of Lazio's festivals, the Vallepietra Potato Festival offers an evening of taste and simplicity: a rustic menu at an affordable price, a postcard-perfect mountain village, and the warm hospitality of a community that keeps its traditions alive.
The Potato Festival in Vallepietra is expected to return in 2026, according to the usual schedule, during a weekend in September in Piazza Italia. The organization is handled by the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Vallepietra, with the support of the Lazio Region and ARSIAL. At the moment, neither the official dates nor the program for the new edition have been published. The festival formula usually follows the one tested over the years: dinner in the square starting at 8:00 PM with a full menu dedicated to the "petacchia," the local yellow-fleshed potato — gnocchi with meat sauce, stewed potatoes with sausages, boiled potatoes with wild mint, desserts, and a drink.
The festival takes place in Piazza Italia, in the center of Vallepietra (RM), at an altitude of over 800 meters in the Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park.
By car: From Rome, take the A24 motorway to the Vicovaro-Mandela exit, then follow the Via Sublacense towards Subiaco; from there, climb up along the Simbrivio Valley to Vallepietra (about 90 km from the capital). By public transport: Cotral bus connections from Rome and Subiaco are available but limited; a car is recommended.
Admission to the festival is free; the dinner is a full menu at a fixed, affordable price (in past editions, approximately 10 euros including a drink).
