A festival born from the iconic product of the Ciociaria mountains

The Potato Festival in Filettino, in the province of Frosinone, is one of the youngest yet most popular autumn food festivals in the upper Ciociaria area. Established in 2022 by the Associazione Culturale Costis Ardua, it has quickly attracted a large audience from across Lazio and the neighboring Abruzzo region. The choice of product is no coincidence: at these altitudes, the mountain potato has always been one of the few reliable crops and a staple of local family cooking.

Filettino, the highest municipality in Lazio

The Municipality of Filettino sits at an altitude of over 1,000 meters within the Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park, surrounded by beech forests, springs, and hiking trails. As the highest town in the region, it boasts a compact historic center filled with stone alleys, arches, and small squares. This intimate layout makes the festival particularly atmospheric, as stalls are scattered along the village streets, allowing visitors to explore the town while sampling delicacies at every stop.

What to eat

The menu revolves entirely around the potato, prepared according to local traditions. Past editions have featured:

• Potato gnocchi served with tomato sauce or ragù;
• Rustic pizzas and potato-based savory pies;
• Fried potatoes and roasted potatoes from the Simbruini mountains;
• Potato stew, the ultimate winter comfort dish;
• Pasta with potatoes and provola cheese, one of the most popular classics.

Alongside potatoes, you will find other local products: honey, local truffles, caciocavallo, and mountain cheeses, as well as cream-filled pastries, crêpes, and local beverages. Local associations often complement the hot dishes with stalls selling handmade crafts and regional specialties.

Music, entertainment, and the festival's "pageants"

The festival is more than just food. From late afternoon, when the stalls open, the historic center comes alive with live music, folk groups, and family entertainment. The most anticipated and humorous moment is the closing ceremony, featuring the election of Miss Patatina, Miss Patatona, and occasionally Mister Patato—a fun tradition that has quickly become the event's trademark.

A growing event

The first edition took place in October 2022, followed by the 2023 and 2024 editions, all held over a single day. In 2025, the festival expanded to a two-day format, held on October 11th and 12th, drawing thousands of visitors thanks to an unseasonably mild weekend. The organizers have already announced plans for a fifth edition.

For those arriving from Rome or the Ciociaria plains, the Potato Festival is the perfect chance to discover a lesser-known side of Lazio in just one afternoon: the Apennine mountains, the Simbruini woods in full foliage, and a rustic, hearty cuisine that defies typical Lazio stereotypes. Many visitors combine the festival with a hike on the park's trails or a visit to the Aniene springs, located just a short distance from the village.
