Christmas in Piglio

An entire village that lights up

From the first weekend of December until the Epiphany, Piglio transforms its historic center into a small Christmas village. The town, perched on the Ernici Mountains in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria region of Lazio, is best known for Cesanese del Piglio, the first DOCG wine of Lazio. In winter, however, its narrow streets and stone alleys are perfectly suited for a family-oriented Christmas, filled with lights, music, and crafts rather than large commercial displays.

The program is the result of a collaboration between the Municipality of Piglio, the Pro Loco, and numerous local associations, who divide the various events of the calendar. The result is a widespread schedule, distributed over several weekends and different locations in the village, almost entirely with free admission.

The markets of Viale Umberto I

The commercial heart of the festival is the Christmas market set up along Viale Umberto I, which occupies the town's main avenue for an entire weekend. The stalls welcome local exhibitors with offerings that revolve around a few recurring themes:

• local crafts — ceramics, wood, textiles, handmade Christmas decorations;
• typical Ciociaria products — cured meats, cheeses, honey, olive oil, and naturally, bottles of Cesanese wine;
• sweets and winter street food, with mulled wine and hot chocolate at the stalls along the avenue;
• gift ideas and small trinkets from local associations.

In recent editions, the market has been accompanied by roaming performances, jugglers, and street entertainment, with the "Artisans in the Village" concept bringing artists among the stalls throughout the day.

Santa's Grotto at the Castle

The most anticipated event for children is Santa's Grotto, set up in the halls of the Baronial Castle of Piglio. Admission is free, and opening hours are concentrated on the afternoons of the central weekends of December, typically from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Inside, little ones find a path decorated with lights and colors, a meeting with Santa Claus, creative workshops, music, and games. Over the years, the setup has moved between the Upper Castle and the Lower Castle, always following the same formula: limited entries at a time, an intimate atmosphere, and local volunteer staff.

Concerts, theater, and shows

The calendar does not end with the markets. In recent editions, the Church of Santa Maria has hosted Christmas concerts — from the brass quintet QuintottoBrass to local choral and band performances — while the Multipurpose Hall has hosted musical shows and amateur theatrical productions.

The highlight for the younger crowd is the Christmas Party in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi: an evening open-air disco with live music, 90s and 2000s DJ sets, artificial snow, cocktails, and mulled wine. The program traditionally closes on January 6th, with the show dedicated to the arrival of the Befana in Piazza Roma.

Why it's worth the trip

Christmas in Piglio does not have the scale of large Alpine markets, and that is precisely its appeal: it is a village Christmas, where the historic center remains the true protagonist and the entire community participates in the organization. A visit can easily be combined with a tasting in the cellars of Cesanese del Piglio DOCG, a walk up to the Castle, and the discovery of other villages in the Aniene Valley and northern Ciociaria.
