The autumn chestnut festival in the historic center of Fiuggi
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Castagne Insieme is the autumn event that brings Piazza Trento e Trieste to life every year in the historic center of Fiuggi, in the province of Frosinone, Lazio. For an entire day, the square transforms into an open-air theater: braziers for roasting chestnuts are lit from the morning, craft stalls open for business, and the village fills with families, curious onlookers, and visitors from the neighboring towns of the Ciociaria region.
The undisputed stars are the roasted chestnuts, red wine, and mulled wine, served by volunteers throughout the day. It follows the most classic formula of an Italian autumn festival, one that needs no grand staging: the warmth of the brazier, the aroma drifting through the alleys, and the desire to be together as the days grow shorter. Alongside the chestnuts, there is space for typical local products and small-scale artisanal crafts.
The event is not limited to tastings. The program, designed for all ages, includes folk music and dancing, performances by folkloric groups, traditional rural games, entertainment for children, and, in recent editions, a fire show to close the evening. Recent editions have featured the flag-wavers from the districts of Cori and the musical group I SaltaPizzica, who accompany the audience with traditional tarantellas and saltarelli from the Lazio region.
Castagne Insieme is organized by the Associazione S.I.A. - Solidarietà In Azione ODV, in collaboration with the Movimento Prosanctitate and the Al Sicomoro inter-parish oratory, with the patronage of the Municipality of Fiuggi and the Pro Loco. The festival was founded with a charitable purpose: the proceeds support educational and recreational activities for local children and adolescents. This is an aspect the organizers proudly uphold, summarized in the spirit of "doing small things with great love."
Fiuggi is known throughout Italy for its thermal waters and the Fiuggi Fonte area, but the event takes place in the upper part of the town, the medieval village perched on the hill that preserves alleys, arches, and panoramic views of the valley. Participating in Castagne Insieme is also an opportunity to discover this more authentic part of the town, often less frequented by tourists on the thermal circuit. In autumn, the chestnut woods of the Ernici Mountains surrounding the town offer one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Lazio Region.
It is not a large festival, and it does not aim to be: it is a community celebration, free of charge, where the quality lies in the genuineness of the welcome. Those looking for an authentic experience of the Lazio autumn, away from more commercial events, will find a pleasant day in Fiuggi, suitable for families and easily accessible from Rome and Frosinone.
For the 2026 edition of Castagne Insieme, an official date has not yet been published. The event is traditionally held in Piazza Trento e Trieste, in the historic center of Fiuggi, on a Sunday in late October, with the possibility of postponement to the first days of November in case of bad weather, as happened in 2025.
For 2026, we can expect the established formula: lit braziers for roasted chestnuts, red wine and mulled wine, a craft and hobby market, traditional games, folk music and dancing, and entertainment for children. Admission to the festival has always been free, and tastings are paid for per consumption, supporting the charitable projects of the organizing association.
The detailed program is usually released a few weeks before the event through the channels of the Municipality of Fiuggi, the Pro Loco, and local radio stations and newspapers in the province of Frosinone.
Piazza Trento e Trieste, in the historic center of Fiuggi (Fiuggi Città), province of Frosinone.
By car: from the A1 motorway, take the Anagni-Fiuggi exit, then the SR 155 for about 15 km. From Rome, the journey takes about an hour and a half. On festival days, it is advisable to leave your car in the parking lots of Fiuggi Fonte or along the access roads to the village and walk up, as the historic center is pedestrianized and narrow.
By bus: Cotral connections from Rome (Anagnina station) and from Frosinone.
Free admission. Tastings of chestnuts, wine, and mulled wine are paid for per consumption, with modest donations; proceeds support the charitable projects of the organizing association.
The event takes place outdoors in mid-autumn: comfortable shoes are recommended for the stone alleys, as well as layered clothing, because temperatures drop rapidly in the evening at this altitude. Fiuggi has numerous accommodation facilities and thermal hotels for those who want to stay for the weekend.
