The Piglio Cesanese Grape Festival is the event that, for over half a century, has marked the end of the harvest season in the town of Piglio, in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria region. Launched in 1972 by then-mayor Benedetto Illuminati, the event has grown into one of the most renowned food and wine festivals in inland Lazio, drawing thousands of visitors to Piglio over a single autumn weekend.

Cesanese del Piglio DOCG, the absolute star

The wine that gives the festival its name is Cesanese del Piglio, the only Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) wine in the province of Frosinone: a deep ruby red with fruity aromas and a warm character, born from vineyards cultivated on the slopes of the Ernici Mountains. During the festival, the historic cellars in the town center and local farms open their doors to visitors, sharing winemaking techniques and offering guided tastings. It is more than just folklore; it is an annual showcase of a rural economy that remains vibrant here.

A heritage from afar

Piglio has been a land of viticulture for centuries, and the festival is its collective celebration. In the 1980s, the historic Cantina Sociale Cesanese del Piglio had over three hundred members and produced tens of thousands of hectoliters annually: figures that explain why the town has built its identity around wine. In the long history of the event, there have been only two interruptions—the 1992 and 2020 editions—which is why the number of editions does not match the years passed since the first one.

The charm of the festival lies above all in its natural setting: the stone alleys of Piglio, the wide-open cellar doors, the scent of grape must, and the view that stretches from the hills down toward the Sacco Valley. Walking through the village during these days means meeting producers in their cellars, listening to traditional Ciociaria songs, and rediscovering a way of celebrating that has never become a tourist spectacle, but has remained a community ritual.

When it takes place

The festival is traditionally held on the first weekend of October, spanning three days. The 51st edition took place from October 3 to 5, 2025; official dates for the next edition are usually announced by the Municipality of Piglio and the organizers in the weeks preceding the event via the municipal website and official social media channels.
