About Livestock Show

Every Ferragosto, the town of San Giuseppe Jato, nestled in the heart of the Valle dello Jato near Palermo, hosts the Valle dello Jato Livestock Show. Dating back to 1780, it is the oldest livestock fair in Sicily. Over three days, the event celebrates native Sicilian breeds, traditional cart parades, PDO cheese tastings, and rural customs, all intertwined with the patronal feast of the Madonna della Provvidenza. It is a vibrant gathering that showcases the island's rural soul, bringing together breeders, artisans, and thousands of visitors.

A fair with roots in 1780

The Valle dello Jato Livestock Show is the oldest livestock event in Sicily. Its origins trace back to 1780, when it began as the fiera jatina-mortillara, the historic cattle fair of the Valle dello Jato. Since then, the tradition has been passed down through generations, becoming a core symbol of identity for San Giuseppe Jato and the entire Palermo province in Sicily.

Animals, native breeds, and rural tradition

The heart of the show is the animal exhibition, featuring cattle, sheep, horses, donkeys, and poultry brought by local breeders. Special focus is placed on native Sicilian breeds, which serve as a bastion of biodiversity and rural culture, including Modicana and Cinisara cattle, Girgentane goats, Syrian and Maltese breeds, and Comisana and Noticiana sheep. The event is organized by the Municipality of San Giuseppe Jato with the patronage of the Experimental Zootechnical Institute for Sicily, which recognizes its value in promoting the livestock sector.

Carts, PDO cheeses, and Sicilian flavors

The show is more than just a livestock exhibition; it is a grand popular festival. The town streets come alive with the parade of Sicilian carts, while dedicated areas offer tastings of the island's finest raw-milk cheeses: Pecorino, Piacentino, Vastedda del Belice, Ragusano, and Caciocavallo palermitano. Visitors can also enjoy local delicacies and grilled meats, alongside high-school equestrian performances.

The link to Ferragosto and the patronal feast

The Livestock Show takes place every year around August 15th, coinciding with the Ferragosto celebrations and the patronal feast of the Madonna della Provvidenza, the patron saint of San Giuseppe Jato. This blend of faith, rural tradition, and agricultural economy makes the event a deeply felt occasion for the entire community, attracting visitors from across the province of Palermo and Western Sicily.

A living heritage

With over two hundred editions behind it, the Valle dello Jato Livestock Show is much more than a fair: it is the living memory of an agricultural region that continues to celebrate its bond with the land and animals, honoring the expertise of breeders and the quality of local produce.

Livestock Show — edition 2026

The Valle dello Jato Livestock Show is expected to return to San Giuseppe Jato in August 2026, for Ferragosto and the patronal feast of the Madonna della Provvidenza, following a tradition established over two centuries ago. Dates and the 2026 program have not yet been officially announced.

The 2026 edition of the Valle dello Jato Livestock Show has not yet been officially announced by the Municipality of San Giuseppe Jato. Historically, the fair is held every year around Ferragosto, as part of the patronal festivities for the Madonna della Provvidenza.

Following previous editions, visitors can expect an exhibition of native Sicilian breeds, the parade of carts, tastings of PDO cheeses, and equestrian shows. The detailed program will be published by the municipal administration in the weeks leading up to the event.
