The 'Second Easter Monday' at the Madonna della Grottella Sanctuary in Copertino
The Urteddra Festival is one of the most cherished and characteristic traditions of the Town of Copertino, in the heart of Salento, province of Lecce (Puglia). It is celebrated every year on the first Tuesday after Easter, the day after Easter Monday, earning it the nickname among locals as the "second Easter Monday" or "Tuesday's Easter." The heart of the festival is the Sanctuary and Park of Madonna della Grottella, nestled in the countryside just outside the city: a vast green space that fills for an entire day with families, groups of friends, children, and pilgrims.
The origins of this devotion date back to the mid-16th century, around 1543-1550, when, according to tradition, a shepherd searching for his calf discovered an image of the Madonna and Child in a cave. This discovery sparked the cult of the Madonna della Grottella, leading to the construction of the sanctuary that still welcomes the faithful today. The site is also deeply connected to the figure of Saint Joseph of Copertino, the "flying" friar, patron saint of the city and students, who spent years of his religious life here.
The dialect term "Urteddra" refers to the vegetable gardens and countryside surrounding the sanctuary, where people once gathered for outdoor lunches after religious services. The day is defined by the traditional flavors of Salento: palummeddre (Easter taralli decorated with hard-boiled eggs), marange (traditional bitter oranges), cumete, and trenule, along with food stalls and picnic areas where visitors enjoy lunch on the grass.
La Urteddra is a free, open-air festival that blends popular faith, conviviality, and Salento identity in one of the most anticipated days of the year in Copertino. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Copertino in collaboration with the municipal administration.
The 2026 Urteddra Festival was held on Tuesday, April 7, the day after Easter Monday, at the Sanctuary and Park of Madonna della Grottella in Copertino (LE). The day was marked by masses at the sanctuary, from early morning until evening, with the participation of Bishop Fernando Filograna. In the large park, there was no shortage of the traditional picnic on the grass, food stalls with palummeddre and marange, rides, and a funfair for children. As always, the stars were the kites that colored the Grottella sky, many built by the little ones in dedicated workshops. The event, with free admission, was organized by the Pro Loco of Copertino in collaboration with the municipal administration.
The festival is held at the Sanctuary and Park of Madonna della Grottella, in the open countryside just outside Copertino (LE), in Salento.
By car: Copertino can be reached via the Lecce ring road and the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli highway. By train: the Copertino station is on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line. The nearest airport is Brindisi-Salento Airport.
The festival is free to attend. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, bringing a blanket or chairs for a picnic on the grass, and for children, bringing or building their own kite. There are ample picnic areas and food stalls on-site.
