The Festival of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Nardò

In the heart of Salento, the Municipality of Nardò (Province of Lecce) pays homage every year to Saints Cosmas and Damian with a deeply rooted festival, celebrated on September 25th and 26th at the local sanctuary dedicated to them. It is one of many recurring events that animate Puglia in honor of the two healing saints during this season, but in Nardò, it retains an intimate and heartfelt character, tied to popular devotion and the life of the neighborhood that gathers around the church.

A sanctuary of ancient devotion

The oldest part of the current sanctuary, including the facade, dates back to 1760 and replaced a smaller church dedicated to the same Saints, founded in the first half of the 16th century by the notary Luigi Calandria. The fame of the numerous miracles attributed to the two martyr saints attracted a multitude of faithful over time, so much so that the original building, which initially consisted of only two rooms, was expanded and renovated until it took on the form of the large chapel we know today by the end of the 19th century.

September 25th and 26th: faith and tradition

As per centuries-old tradition, the festivities are concentrated on September 25th and 26th. The religious program is marked by Eucharistic celebrations at the sanctuary and culminates in the solemn procession that winds through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the participation of the faithful and the sound of the town band. The liturgical feast of the Saints attracts devotees from Nardò and neighboring towns, in an atmosphere of reflection and celebration passed down from generation to generation.

The fair and public festivities

The religious rites have always been accompanied by the public festivities typical of Salento patronal feasts: the illuminations that light up the streets, stalls with sweets and local products, the fair-like atmosphere that enlivens the neighborhood, and, according to tradition, fireworks to close the festivities. The custom of the fair has its roots in an ancient privilege granted by King Ferdinand IV, testifying to the centuries-old bond between the community and the cult of the two saints.

Cosmas and Damian, the healing saints

Physician brothers who lived according to tradition in the East, Cosmas and Damian are venerated as the "anargyroi," meaning those who treated the sick without asking for money. Throughout Puglia and much of Southern Italy, their cult is deeply rooted, and their late-September festival represents a powerful moment of popular religiosity. In Nardò, this devotion finds an ancient and beloved point of reference in the local sanctuary.
