Every year, towards the end of September, the town of Lequile—located in the province of Lecce, in the heart of the Apulian Salento—hosts two days dedicated to the Madonna della Consolazione. It is one of the most cherished events on the local calendar, seamlessly weaving religious fervor with the conviviality of the town square: on one hand, the Marian rites; on the other, the renowned Panzarotto Festival, which showcases one of the most iconic and indulgent treats of Salento cuisine.

Devotion to the Madonna della Consolazione

The spiritual heart of the festival is the veneration of the Madonna della Consolazione, a tradition deeply rooted in the Lequile community for generations. The celebrations are preceded by a novena and culminate in a solemn procession through the historic center, accompanied by a brass band and the faithful. It is a moment of communal reflection that renews the ancient bond between the town and its patron saint, typical of religious festivals in Salento.

The Panzarotto Festival

The religious dimension is complemented by the convivial spirit of the festival. The undisputed star is the panzarotto—a deep-fried dough pocket filled with tomato and mozzarella—which represents one of the most beloved examples of Apulian street food. Throughout the town's streets and squares, food stalls are set up where visitors can sample freshly fried panzarotti, as well as other Salento specialties like pittule, stuffed focaccia, and traditional rustic dishes.

Music and village atmosphere

The two-day event is brought to life by live music, festive lights, and performances that fill the center of Lequile until late at night. It is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic Salento village just a few kilometers from Lecce, away from the main tourist hubs and immersed in the genuine atmosphere of Apulian popular festivals, where the sacred and the secular have coexisted for centuries.
