The great mountain running event in Val d'Ultimo along the farmstead trail
The Ultner Höfelauf is considered the largest and most renowned sporting event in Val d'Ultimo (Ultental), one of the most authentic valleys in South Tyrol, located in the municipality of Ultimo/Ulten, in the province of Bolzano (Trentino-Alto Adige). Established in 2006, the event has grown year after year to become one of the most beloved mountain running races in South Tyrol, attracting hundreds of athletes and enthusiasts from across the region and beyond.
The main course covers approximately 18 kilometers with nearly 500 meters of elevation gain along the historic Höfeweg, the ancient path connecting the valley's farmsteads. The start is in Pracupola/Kuppelwies: from here, the race climbs up to Santa Geltrude/St. Gertraud before descending on the opposite side of the valley to return to the finish, featuring a mix of asphalt, forest roads, and trails immersed in the alpine landscape.
The event is designed for all levels and the whole family, offering several participation formats:
The Ultner Höfelauf is more than just a competition. After the races, the finish area near Zoccolo/Zoggler Lake turns into a grand village festival: through the "Guat Gessn" initiative, stalls offer local products and valley specialties, accompanied by live music and family entertainment. It is a perfect opportunity to discover the hospitality of Val d'Ultimo, a land of farmsteads, dairies, and living rural traditions.
The race is organized by the Skiclub Ulten in collaboration with the Tourismusgenossenschaft Ultental-Proveis and is certified as a Green Event, reflecting a commitment to environmental sustainability. The event is a staple of the summer in the valley, successfully combining sporting passion, regional promotion, and a sense of community in one of the most picturesque corners of Trentino-Alto Adige.
On Sunday, July 19, 2026, the Val d'Ultimo celebrates the twentieth edition of the Ultner Höfelauf. This anniversary coincides with an important milestone: for the first time, the race joins the Top7 circuit, the series featuring the main popular races in South Tyrol.
The main event starts at 10:00 AM from Pracupola/Kuppelwies, following the classic 18 km route along the farmstead trail towards Santa Geltrude and back. Alongside the classic race, there will be the fun run, the "Guat Gongen" walk, and races for children and teenagers. Afterward, the Zoccolo Lake area will host the "Guat Gessn" festival with local valley products and live music.
Pracupola/Kuppelwies can be reached by car from Merano by driving up the Val d'Ultimo along the SS238. From Bolzano, take the MEBO highway to Merano and follow the signs for Ultimo/Ulten. In summer, the valley is served by the SüdtirolMobil bus network.
Registration is available online on the official event website (fees starting from approximately 33 euros) or on-site in the days leading up to the race, subject to availability. The number of participants is limited.
We recommend wearing trail-running gear suitable for mountain terrain and shoes with good grip for the trail sections. The finish area at Zoccolo Lake offers refreshments and the "Guat Gessn" gastronomic festival.
