The Nativity on the Monte Orco hill, in the heart of Salento
In the heart of lower Salento, the Tricase Living Nativity is one of Puglia's most anticipated Christmas events. Every year, between Christmas Eve and Epiphany, the Monte Orco hill, overlooking the town of Tricase (Province of Lecce), transforms into an ancient village where the gestures, sounds, and scents of traditional Salento rural life come alive.
The representation unfolds along a two-kilometer-long trail crossing four hectares of Mediterranean scrub, winding through dry-stone walls, olive trees, and natural caves. Visitors are immersed in the scenes of the biblical Bethlehem, recreated with meticulous attention to detail, for a visit that typically lasts between sixty and ninety minutes.
The true protagonists are the residents of Tricase themselves: over 200 actors, including adults and children, bring fifty ancient crafts to life. Blacksmiths, potters, bakers, weavers, and cobblers revive a vanished world as the path leads toward the Nativity cave.
Founded in the 1970s by a group of enthusiasts, the event is now one of the longest-running living nativities in Italy. The 2025/2026 edition marked the 44th anniversary and was dedicated to the theme of Peace, featuring the symbolic arrival of the Peace Light from Bethlehem.
On Epiphany, January 6th, the Living Nativity reaches its most emotional peak with the procession of the Three Wise Men, who set off from the historic center of Tricase to reach the manger and pay homage to the Child.
Admission is free, with the option to leave a voluntary donation to support the organizing committee. Promoted by the Tricase Living Nativity Committee, the event is a highlight of Christmas tourism in Salento and the entire Puglia region, attracting thousands of visitors from all over Italy every year.
