The smallest (and most special) Carnival in Italy

On the Tremiti Islands, the only archipelago in Apulia and one of the least populated municipalities in Italy, the Carnival has a unique charm. There are no massive floats like those in mainland cities or the crowds of Putignano: here, the festival is made of a few dozen people, children in costume, and an entire community gathering in the narrow streets of the island of San Nicola, the main hub of the municipality of Isole Tremiti, in the province of Foggia.

The "Laterza" preschool parade

The little ones are the absolute stars. Children from the "Laterza" preschool—named after Vito and Antonella Laterza, who were deeply connected to the Tremiti—kick off a colorful masked parade. Starting from the school, the small procession travels across the island to the central square, amidst confetti, joy, and the affectionate gaze of parents, grandparents, and residents. It is Carnival in its most genuine form: a community ritual where the island's recently reopened school becomes the beating heart of the festivities.

A tradition that endures by the sea

Celebrating Carnival on an island home to only a few families in winter holds a value that goes beyond mere entertainment: it is a way to keep the community alive, to help children grow up with local traditions, and to remember that even the most isolated patch of land has its own celebrations. The Tremiti—San Nicola, San Domino, Capraia, and Pianosa—are known to summer visitors for their crystal-clear waters and the protected nature of the Marine Reserve, but it is on days like this that one discovers the archipelago's true soul.

An off-season experience

Those who find themselves in the Tremiti in winter can experience an atmosphere far removed from summer tourism: the Adriatic Sea, the silence of the islands, and, for one day, the colorful joy of masks. The Carnival is part of the Tremiti community calendar, which also includes the Assumption Day festivities in August and the Feast of Saint Nicholas of Myra in December. A small event that is well worth the trip for those seeking the authenticity of seaside villages.
