The festival of traditions of Val Cosa, recognized as a Quality Festival
Among the foothills of Western Friuli, where the Cosa stream carves its valley, the village of Castelnovo del Friuli preserves in the hamlet of Paludea one of the most authentic festivals in the area: the Tradizion Cjastelane. It is a festival that, from its name in the Friulian language, declares its intent — to celebrate the traditions of Val Cosa, its cuisine, its products, and its people.
The commitment of the Pro Loco Valcosa and its volunteers has been rewarded with a prestigious recognition: Tradizion Cjastelane is indeed one of the events in Friuli Venezia Giulia awarded the "Sagra di Qualità" (Quality Festival) mark by UNPLI, the National Union of Pro Loco of Italy, which certifies the extraordinary commitment to preserving local traditions, enhancing typical products, and attention to organization. A seal that tells of the seriousness and passion of a small mountain community.
Among the most beloved events is the Marcia del Vin (Wine Walk), a non-competitive walk that crosses the paths and vineyards of Val Cosa on routes of varying lengths, with tasting stops along the way. Alongside sport, the program includes a football tournament, an artisan market with local products, concerts and folk music, and convivial competitions such as the meatball contest. The cuisine is traditional: wild herb ravioli with butter and sage, gnocchi with ragù, salami with vinegar and onion, frico with polenta. Flavors of the past, served in an intimate and genuine setting, far from mass tourism.
The 2026 edition, the 43rd, will be held in Paludea di Castelnovo del Friuli on June 2nd, 6th, and 7th. Organized by the Pro Loco Valcosa, Tradizion Cjastelane confirms its focus on the traditions of Val Cosa: food and wine, sports, markets, and local products, in an event awarded the "Sagra di Qualità" (Quality Festival) mark by UNPLI.
