The red onion and pumpkin take centre stage in Val Cosa
At the foot of the Carnic Prealps, where Val Cosa opens onto the upper Pordenone plain, Cavasso Nuovo has been cultivating for centuries a variety of onion with an intense colour and a sweet, delicate flavour: the Red Onion of Cavasso Nuovo and Val Cosa, recognized as a Slow Food Presidium. This iconic vegetable, alongside pumpkin, is celebrated at the Autumn Festival, organized by the Red Onion Producers' Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Cavasso Nuovo and local associations.
The event takes place every year on the first weekend of October, coinciding with the feast of the patron saint San Remigio: a typical blend in Friulian communities, where the agricultural and religious calendars merge into a single celebration. The village streets are lined with stalls selling local products and crafts, while food and wine kiosks offer menus featuring red onion, pumpkin, and local traditional specialities.
The Autumn Festival is more than just gastronomy. The programme includes conferences dedicated to the history and value of the red onion—complete with a documentary produced by the Producers' Association—exhibitions, activities for children, and musical performances by local artists. Over the years, the festival has also attracted the historic train from the FS Foundation, stopping at Cavasso for those arriving from Treviso along the scenic foothill line.
Cavasso Nuovo is a gateway to the Pordenone foothills and Val Cosa, a land of castles, springs, and ancient crafts. Visiting the Autumn Festival means discovering a lesser-known, authentic side of Friuli, where a small vegetable has become the symbol of an entire community.
The 12th edition of the Autumn Festival is expected on the first weekend of October 2026, following the established schedule that has always linked the event to the patronal feast of San Remigio. The festival confirms its tried-and-tested format: producers' stands, food and wine kiosks with menus featuring red onion and pumpkin, cultural moments, and musical entertainment throughout the village.
The detailed programme will be announced in the coming weeks. Based on previous editions, the festival typically spans three days with:
Cavasso Nuovo is reached from the Pordenone foothills; the reference motorway exit is A28, continuing towards Val Cosa. A historic train stop is possible on dedicated editions.
Free entry to the festival area. Tastings and dishes are paid for at the kiosks.
Accommodation facilities are available in the Pordenone foothills and in Pordenone.
