The queen of Sicilian pastry takes center stage in Capaci for Republic Day
The Traditional Sicilian Cassata Festival brings one of Sicily's most beloved and iconic desserts to the center of Capaci, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo. The event takes place along Via Domenico Sommariva, transforming the street into a gourmet trail dedicated to artisanal pastry, with the cassata as the absolute star.
For centuries, the Sicilian cassata has been a hallmark of the island's identity and pastry tradition. Sponge cake, sweetened sheep's milk ricotta, almond paste, sugar glaze, candied fruit, and pumpkin preserve come together in a sumptuous dessert, the result of the many cultural influences that have shaped Sicily. The festival was created to showcase this confectionery excellence and share its history with visitors, blending the art of baking with artisanal skills passed down through generations.
The heart of the day is the free tasting of authentic Sicilian cassata, prepared by local master pastry chefs. Surrounding the tasting stalls is a program of folklore and entertainment designed for families and curious visitors, making the festival a moment of celebration and conviviality for the entire Capaci community.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Capaci with the support of the Regional Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Mediterranean Fisheries, and is symbolically linked to the Republic Day celebrations on June 2nd. It is an engaging way to combine a national civil holiday with the promotion of the best local gastronomic traditions in one of the most well-known towns on the Palermo coast.
