Ancient crafts, legends, and local flavors in Varisella, in the heart of the Valli di Lanzo
In the heart of the Valli di Lanzo, just a few kilometers from Turin, the small town of Varisella (Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont) opens its streets and squares for "Tra masche e diaulot", a day that weaves together memory, folklore, and taste. The event's title captures two souls of the village: the masche, enigmatic female figures from Piedmontese folk tradition who are part witch and part healer, and the diaulot ("little devils"), the historical nickname by which the people of Varisella have always been known.
The event aims to revive the atmosphere of times past: the ancient crafts of the valleys, folk traditions passed down through generations, artisanal knowledge, and the genuine flavors of mountain cuisine. It is an opportunity to rediscover the identity of a mountain village and interpret the landscape through its legends, in a continuous dialogue between history and storytelling.
"Tra masche e diaulot" is not an isolated event; it is part of the Festival dei Saperi, a widespread cultural project promoted by the Unione Montana di Comuni delle Valli di Lanzo, Ceronda e Casternone. Launched in May 2026, the Festival connects fifteen municipalities in the area with fifteen distinct appointments from May to September, all sharing a common thread: to enhance the tangible and intangible heritage of the valleys by connecting local experiences, knowledge, and peculiarities. The project's logo features an open book, a symbol of knowledge that does not remain closed but circulates among the communities.
Alongside Varisella, the Festival network includes Lanzo Torinese, Germagnano, Coassolo Torinese, Traves, Balangero, Cantoira, and Corio, among others, each with its own themed event. The calendar is promoted through an integrated communication strategy in collaboration with Visit Piemonte, which brings the valley events to the region's tourism and social media channels.
On Sunday, June 14, 2026, Varisella brought to life an atmosphere suspended between legend and reality with "Tra masche e diaulot", featuring ancient crafts, folk traditions, and local knowledge and flavors. The event represented the Varisella stop of the Festival dei Saperi, the widespread cultural network promoted by the Unione Montana di Comuni delle Valli di Lanzo, Ceronda e Casternone, which involved fifteen municipalities with as many events in 2026.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (times and individual activities) was not publicly released through official channels. According to the organizers, the day was dedicated to ancient crafts, folk traditions, and the legends of the masche and diaulot, with moments focused on local knowledge and flavors.
