Appennine potato tortelli at the Circolo Spola d'Oro in La Briglia
The Tortello Festival is one of the most cherished events in the Val di Bisenzio. It takes place in La Briglia, a hardworking, industrious village in the municipality of Vaiano, in the province of Prato, at the Circolo Ricreativo Spola d'Oro on Via Bruno Fattori 4. Sponsored by the Municipality of Vaiano, the event is organized by the club's volunteers and, as the organizers note, represents a precious moment of community and sharing, where the wisdom and experience of the women in the kitchen blend with the enthusiasm and commitment of the younger volunteers.
The signature dish of the festival is the potato tortello, a specialty typical of much of the Tuscan Apennines and the Prato area. It consists of fresh pasta filled with a soft potato mixture, served with a classic meat sauce: a dish that is both humble and generous, reflecting the peasant and mountain culture of inland Tuscany. The tortelli are rolled out and sealed by hand by the local signore, ensuring freshness and authenticity. Alongside the tortelli, the club's tradition also brings gnocco fritto and other homemade local dishes to the table.
The Tortello Festival is more than just a gastronomic event: it is a social occasion that strengthens the sense of belonging within the La Briglia community. The food stalls remain open all day, and the atmosphere is that of a convivial, family-friendly, authentic Tuscan village festival. A takeaway service is also available: those who wish can bring their own containers and receive fresh tortelli to enjoy at home, with the sauce packed separately.
The event is traditionally held in the spring, with an edition taking place in Vaiano, along the valley crossed by the Bisenzio River, just a few kilometers from Prato and Florence. In case of bad weather, the festival continues: it takes place indoors within the Circolo Spola d'Oro premises.
The 2026 Tortello Festival was held on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at the Circolo Ricreativo Spola d'Oro in La Briglia, a village in Vaiano (PO), with the patronage of the Municipality of Vaiano. The stalls remained open all day, offering the famous potato tortelli served with meat sauce, handmade according to the traditional recipe of the Tuscan Apennines, along with gnocco fritto and other homemade specialties.
As every year, the festival combined good food with the value of sharing, thanks to the precious intergenerational work of the club's volunteers. A takeaway service was also available. In case of bad weather, the event would have taken place indoors within the club's premises.
A gastronomic village festival without a structured artistic program: the heart of the day is the kitchen. The Circolo Spola d'Oro stalls served potato tortelli with meat sauce, gnocco fritto, and other traditional local dishes throughout the day. A takeaway service was also available (bringing your own containers was recommended).
