Every year, as winter draws to a close, the small town of Torricella, in the province of Taranto, transforms into a grand open-air stage. The Torricella Carnival is one of the most cherished events on the local calendar: a popular festival that combines allegorical floats, costumed groups, music, and widespread participation, drawing large crowds to the streets of this Ionian village in Puglia.
Having reached its more mature editions in recent years, the Torricella Carnival boasts a well-established history: as early as 2018, the event celebrated its twentieth anniversary, restarting with enthusiasm after a brief hiatus. In 2025, the event reached its twenty-fourth edition, confirming the deep bond between the festival and its community. It is promoted by the Torricella Carnival Committee, which works passionately every year on the construction of the floats, in close collaboration with the municipal administration, which grants its patronage.
The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats, true papier-mรขchรฉ masterpieces built in the preceding months by groups of enthusiasts and volunteers. Accompanied by costumed groups and choreographed performances, the floats travel through the main streets of the town, including the stretch connecting the Monacizzo-Torricella provincial road to Via Le Grazie, Via Rosario, and Via Roma, before reaching the center. The colorful parade is designed especially for children and families, the undisputed protagonists of this festival dedicated to joy and imagination.
The parade traditionally concludes with a grand final party in the square, enlivened by music and entertainment with DJ sets and live vocals. The most anticipated moment is the awarding of the winning float, which determines the most creative group of the edition. Confetti, streamers, traditional seasonal sweets, and masks of all kinds complete an atmosphere of shared joy that involves all generations.
Located in the Ionian hinterland, just a few kilometers from the beaches of Monacizzo and the Taranto coast, Torricella proudly preserves this tradition, which is part of the rich landscape of carnivals in Puglia. It is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Province of Taranto, far from the major tourist flows, and to experience a genuine moment of celebration built entirely on the passion of its inhabitants.
The Torricella Carnival Committee has not yet announced the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Carnival in Torricella, in the province of Taranto. As per tradition, the festival is expected to take place during the Carnival period, between February and March, with the parade of allegorical floats, costumed groups, and the final party in the square. The program will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Torricella can be reached by car via the SS7ter and the provincial network connecting Taranto to the Ionian coast. The reference railway station is Taranto, which is well-served by regional lines; the nearest airports are Brindisi-Salento and Bari-Palese.
Participation in the parade is free and open to everyone. The event takes place outdoors along the streets of the center: comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the season are recommended. Recommended for families with children.
