The Assumption sea procession in Marina di Pulsano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of summer, the town of Pulsano, overlooking the Ionian Sea in the province of Taranto, hosts one of its most heartfelt religious events: the celebrations in honor of the Madonna Maris Stella. The festivities take place on August 14th and 15th, when the local maritime community and the thousands of vacationers crowding the coast gather around the small church of Montedarena to honor the Virgin of the Assumption, invoked as the Star of the Sea and protector of all who sail.
The climax of the event is the characteristic sea procession on August 15th. The statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary Maris Stella is carried in a procession to the shore, embarked, and taken along the entire Pulsano coastline on a boat followed by a long parade of festively decorated vessels. Upon returning, the statue is brought ashore at Montedarena and carried on shoulders through the crowds back to the nearby Stella Maris Church, where Holy Mass is celebrated. It is an ancient and deeply felt rite that draws thousands of faithful and curious onlookers to the beaches.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the Maris Stella Rectory, a small church with a distinctive bell tower located in the Montedarena area, facing one of the town's main beaches. The building was inaugurated on July 4, 1964, thanks to the dedication of local resident Angelina Screti and the then-parish priest Father Bruno Falloni. Today, as the seat of the diocesan rectory, the church provides a precious pastoral role for residents and the many tourists on the coast, serving as a landmark during the summer months.
The Madonna Maris Stella celebrations represent much more than a religious anniversary: they are a cornerstone of the identity of Marina di Pulsano and its maritime vocation, a deep bond between the community and the sea that has shaped its history. The procession, accompanied by the town band, blends popular faith, folklore, and the warm atmosphere of the Italian Ferragosto. Dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the festival is traditionally held on August 14th and 15th, but for program confirmation, one must wait for official communications from the rectory and the Municipality of Pulsano.
