The patronal feast of Monteparano, blending faith, brass bands, and Salento traditions
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year in early August, the small town of Monteparano, in the heart of the Taranto Salento in the province of Taranto, gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Gaetano da Thiene. The patronal feast is the most significant event of the year for this Apulian community, weaving together religious devotion, folk tradition, and local conviviality.
Monteparano's devotion to Saint Gaetano dates back to 1656, when a devastating plague ravaged the Kingdom of Naples. The population attributed their miraculous protection from the contagion to Saint Gaetano and, in gratitude, proclaimed him their patron saint. Since then, the celebration has been held without interruption, passed down through generations as a symbol of faith and collective identity.
The main day, August 7th, is marked by rituals the community has guarded for centuries. Solemn masses are held in the mother church, dedicated to Maria SS.ma Annunziata. In the evening, the saint's statue is displayed in Piazza Castello, where, in a gesture deeply cherished by the locals, the mayor symbolically hands the keys of the town to Saint Gaetano. This is followed by a procession through the village streets, accompanied by a brass band and the participation of the entire citizenry.
Alongside the religious dimension, the feast offers a rich secular program that enlivens the town for several days:
The Feast of Saint Gaetano is much more than a religious anniversary: it is an occasion for Monteparano to reconnect with its roots, welcoming back former residents and families, and strengthening the bonds of this small Apulian community. Visitors to Salento in summer will find here the authentic spirit of Southern Italian patronal feasts, complete with illuminations, brass bands, local flavors, and popular devotion.
Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition of the Saint Gaetano Feast in Monteparano have not yet been published. According to tradition, the festivities take place in the first days of August, culminating on August 7th, the day dedicated to the patron saint. As every year, religious celebrations in the mother church, the procession through the village streets, brass band concerts, sports tournaments, and the final fireworks display are expected. This page will be updated as soon as the festival committee releases the official calendar.
The festivities are centered in Piazza Castello and around the mother church of Maria SS.ma Annunziata, in the center of Monteparano (74020), in the province of Taranto.
Monteparano can be reached by car via the SS7 ter and the provincial roads connecting Taranto (about 25 km away) to Salento. The nearest train stations are in San Giorgio Jonico and Sava; the reference airport is Brindisi-Salento.
The patronal feast is free and open to the public. For the detailed program, it is recommended to follow the channels of the Maria SS.ma Annunziata Parish and the Monteparano Pro Loco.
