The two patron saints of Maruggio celebrated on July 13th and 14th in the Salento village of the Knights of Malta
The Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Christopher is the most anticipated event of the year in Maruggio, a small town of just over five thousand inhabitants in the province of Taranto, in western Salento overlooking the Ionian Sea. Every July 13th and 14th, the historic center of the village—founded by the Knights of Malta and still recognizable today for its maze of alleys and ancient churches—transforms into a theater of faith and popular tradition.
Saint John the Baptist is generally celebrated on June 24th, but in Maruggio, the patronal feast falls in mid-July. Local tradition recounts that the saint saved the town from a violent storm: hence, by a 1928 episcopal decree, the celebrations were moved to July 13th and 14th, which have since unfailingly marked the heart of the Maruggio summer.
Alongside the religious aspect, the patronal feast has its civil and popular side: the luminarie (light displays) that illuminate squares and streets, the brass band concerts, food stalls with local specialties, and moments of conviviality that reunite families and emigrants who have returned to town for the occasion. A typical blend of the great Apulian patronal feasts, where the sacred and the profane coexist in two days of intense participation.
Located about 40 kilometers from Taranto, Maruggio also includes the seaside area of Campomarino, with its long sandy coast on the Ionian Sea, and is known for the production of Primitivo wine. The patronal feast is the ideal opportunity to discover the ancient village, its history linked to the Order of Malta, and the hospitality of the most authentic Puglia, far from the major tourist flows.
The Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Christopher returns to Maruggio on July 13th and 14th, 2026, confirming the traditional dates set in the town calendar. The two days revolve around the solemn processions of the patron saints' statues through the streets of the Salento village's historic center, accompanied by liturgical rites, light displays, and brass band music.
As every year, alongside the religious program, there will be a civil one, featuring musical events, food stalls, and moments of popular celebration that animate the squares and alleys. The complete calendar for the 2026 edition will be published by the organizing committee in the weeks preceding the feast.
The detailed civil program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published by the organizing committee. As per established tradition, the festivities are spread over two days:
The complete calendar with concerts, times, and events will be released in the weeks leading up to the feast.
Maruggio is located in western Salento, about 40 km from Taranto. By car, it can be reached via the SS7 ter road and the provincial roads of the Ionian side; the nearest railway station is in Manduria or Nardò, which are then connected by bus and taxi. The most convenient airport is Brindisi.
All religious and civil events of the patronal feast are free to attend.
Numerous accommodations, farmhouses, and holiday homes are available in the village and along the Campomarino coast, which is particularly popular in the summer: it is advisable to book in advance.
