The Tornareccio Carnival

The Tornareccio Carnival is one of the most cherished highlights of the carnival season in the municipality of Tornareccio, a small village nestled in the hinterland of the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo—a place famous for its honey and its renowned mosaics. Every year, the event transforms the town center into a vibrant procession of colors, masks, and cheer, drawing families and curious visitors from neighboring towns.

A community-born celebration

The event is organized by the "Bentornato Carnevale – Noi può per Mattia" association with the support of the Municipality of Tornareccio. Its stated goal is to revive the community's historic carnival traditions while promoting the arts and the culture of recycling: the allegorical floats are handcrafted by local groups, often using reclaimed materials, in a months-long effort that involves both young and old.

The float parade

The heart of the day is the parade of allegorical floats, which travels along the town's main arteries—from the Atessa-Tornareccio provincial road to Viale Don Bosco, ending at Piazza Sandro Pertini—accompanied by masked groups, marching bands, and street performers. The parade typically features floats built in Tornareccio alongside those from neighboring municipalities, showcasing the collaborative spirit of the festival.

Music, shows, and fireworks

Throughout the day, there is no shortage of live music, dancing, performances, and entertainment for children. The event traditionally concludes with a fireworks display that brings the festive afternoon to a brilliant close. Admission to the parades along the town streets is free, in the true spirit of a popular festival.
