Halloween night within the walls of the Abruzzo fortress, amidst legends, fire, and potions

There are few places in Italy better suited to celebrate Halloween than the Medieval Castle of Roccascalegna, in the province of Chieti. Suspended on an imposing limestone spur overlooking the village and the Rio Secco valley, the fortress looks like it was plucked from a fantasy film: towers, walkways, gothic halls, and breathtaking views of the Abruzzo hinterland. On the night of October 31st, this natural setting lights up with fire and chilling atmospheres for one of the most anticipated events in the local autumn calendar.
The evening tour turns the castle into an open-air theater: illusionists, witches, fortune tellers, and ghosts guide visitors through historic halls and illuminated corridors, amidst carved pumpkins, music, and special effects. The central theme is the famous legend of Baron Corvo de Corvis, the 17th-century lord who allegedly demanded the Ius Primae Noctis from the village brides, until he was stabbed during one of those nights. Since then, it is said that the imprint of his bloodied hand reappears on the rock: a story perfect for Halloween night. The fire shows, held outside the fortress, are among the most spectacular moments of the evening.
The event does not end on the night of October 31st. On November 1st, the Castle of Roccascalegna opens its doors to families with an event designed for the little ones: the potion workshop ("Potion Lab"), where children, guided by entertainers, mix mysterious ingredients amidst bubbling cauldrons and themed corners, spending an afternoon as little alchemists. It is a chance to discover the castle in a playful, family-friendly way.
The manor, whose origins date back to the Lombard period and which was expanded between the 11th and 12th centuries, is now one of the symbols of cultural tourism in the Sangro-Aventino area and one of the most photographed castles in Abruzzo. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Roccascalegna, which manages the promotion of the fortress and the historic center. Halloween at the Castle is now a recurring event that combines entertainment, popular tradition, and heritage rediscovery, attracting visitors from all over the province of Chieti and Abruzzo.
At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition of Halloween at the Castle of Roccascalegna have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the event usually takes place between the night of October 31st — featuring fire shows, witches, and the tale of the legend of Baron Corvo de Corvis — and November 1st, which is dedicated to families with the potion workshop for children. To find out the dates, times, and booking methods for the 2026 edition, it is recommended to follow the official castle website and the social media channels of the Pro Loco of Roccascalegna.
