The patronal feast of Casoli: a blend of faith, traditional offerings, and major concerts

The Patronal Feast of Saint Reparata and Saint Gilberto is the most significant and heartfelt celebration in Casoli, a village in the province of Chieti, nestled in the heart of the Abruzzo region overlooking the Aventino Valley. Every year, in early October, the historic center—dominated by the Ducal Castle—dresses up to honor Saint Reparata, the town's patron saint, and Saint Gilberto, in a celebration that unites religious fervor with popular participation.
The most iconic and defining moment of the festival is the Day of the Donativi: a grand traditional costume parade where locals reenact ancient agricultural tasks, accompanied by decorated floats. Women walk through the streets balancing conocchie (elaborate wheat bundles) and stunning copper basins filled with sweets on their heads. At the end of the procession, these offerings are auctioned off, with the proceeds funding the festival's organization—a gesture of community solidarity passed down through generations.
Religious celebrations, including the solemn procession of the saints' statues through the village streets, are intertwined with the Saint Reparata Fair, traditionally held on the first Sunday of October, featuring market stalls, local products, and handicrafts. It is the perfect opportunity to rediscover the flavors and trades of the Abruzzo tradition.
For years, the Casoli Patronal Feast has offered a rich lineup of free concerts in Piazza Brigata Maiella and the historic center, attracting big names from the Italian music scene. The evenings conclude with fireworks, the traditional gala, and performances by marching bands. It is a successful blend of the sacred and the secular that makes these festivities an unmissable appointment in the Abruzzo autumn.
The Feast of Saint Reparata and Saint Gilberto represents much more than a religious anniversary: it is the soul of Casoli and its community, a heritage of popular traditions that renews the bond between the village and its history every year.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Reparata and Saint Gilberto in Casoli (province of Chieti) will once again feature the rites and traditions that bring the Abruzzo village to life every October. The official dates and the detailed program have not yet been released by the Festival Committee. As per tradition, we look forward to the Day of the Donativi, the procession of the patron saints, the Saint Reparata Fair, and the musical evenings in Piazza Brigata Maiella.
Casoli can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (Val di Sangro exit) or via the Fondovalle Aventino road; the nearest train station is in Lanciano, which is connected by local buses. The historic center is well-served by parking areas during the festival days.
The festivities traditionally take place in early October, with the Fair on the first Sunday of the month and the Day of the Donativi on October 8th.
Concerts in the square and events are free of charge.
