The Feast in Honor of Saint Anthony of Padua takes place every year in mid-September in the Pianibbie-Ripitella district, one of the scattered rural settlements in the territory of Casoli, in the province of Chieti. Casoli, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, sits on a hill at the foot of the Majella, dominated by its ducal castle and overlooking the Aventino Valley and Lake Sant'Angelo. Dozens of districts surround the village, each with its own small community and festival: the one in Pianibbie-Ripitella, dedicated to the Saint of Padua, is one of the most anticipated events of the late summer.
Saint Anthony of Padua, one of Italy's most beloved saints, is celebrated here not on his liturgical feast day of June 13, but in Septemberโa common custom in Abruzzo's districts when field work slows down and families spread across the territory can reunite. The religious heart of the day is the procession with the statue of the Saint, which travels through the district streets accompanied by the Casoli Band, whose presence is a hallmark of all local festivities. Alongside the devotional aspect, the secular celebration is organized by the Pianibbie-Ripitella Festival Committee in collaboration with the Maria SS. Ausiliatrice Parish.
Following the procession, the evening comes alive with live music and entertainment designed for all ages: dance orchestras, singers, and local groups keep the small community and the many visitors from Casoli and neighboring towns entertained until late. It is a quintessential Abruzzo village gathering, where the square becomes a communal living room: neighbors meet, dance, chat, and share the end of summer.
The Saint Anthony Feast in Pianibbie-Ripitella does not aim to be a massive event; it is a snapshot of an authentic, lesser-known Abruzzoโthe world of districts, passed-down devotion, and village social life. Those who visit discover a corner of the Casoli countryside far from the tourist circuits, just a few kilometers from the historic center of Casoli and its castle, set in a landscape of hills looking toward the Majella.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Saint Anthony of Padua festivities in Pianibbie-Ripitella, Casoli, have not yet been announced. In recent years, the festival has been held in mid-September following a well-established format: a procession with the statue of the Saint accompanied by the Casoli Band, followed by evening live music and entertainment in the square organized by the Festival Committee. The detailed program and date will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
