Miracoli Living Nativity

A living nativity in the shadow of the Miracoli sanctuary

The Miracoli Living Nativity is one of the most beloved Christmas traditions in Casalbordino, in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. The event takes place in the hamlet of Miracoli, in the grounds surrounding the Oratorio San Benedetto and the Basilica della Madonna dei Miracoli, a sanctuary built on the site of a Marian apparition and a site of pilgrimage for centuries.

For two evenings, typically between Christmas and the New Year, the village comes alive with the Nativity scene: the Holy Family, shepherds, the Three Wise Men, farmers, and ancient trades are brought to life by dozens of costumed actors, all volunteers from the local community.

A journey through biblical scenes and ancient trades

The route leads visitors through carefully reconstructed settings: artisan workshops, shepherd fires, and traditional market stalls, culminating at the hut housing the Holy Family. Each edition features a central theme that guides the performance and deepens its spiritual significance.

A staple of the Casalbordino Christmas

Organized by the Santa Maria dei Miracoli parish community, the living nativity is now a fixture of the Casalbordino Christmas calendar, integrated into the broader Casalese Christmas program. The setting of the sanctuary, one of the most important places of worship on the Trabocchi Coast and the Vasto area, adds a strong sense of identity and devotion to the performance, attracting numerous visitors from neighboring towns every year.
