The Atri Ferragosto Festival, the heart of the Teramo summer

In Atri, an ancient ducal city in the province of Teramo, the Atri Ferragosto Festival is the event that marks the peak of the summer season. For a few days in mid-August, the historic center and the characteristic San Domenico district (Capo d'Atri) transform into an open-air stage where rural tradition, religious devotion, folklore, and Abruzzese gastronomy intertwine. It is one of the most iconic and popular events in the entire Abruzzo Region, attracting thousands of people every year.

The Cattle Fair and rural heritage

The core of the festival is the Cattle Fair, an ancient livestock market held in the San Domenico district, the birthplace of the event. Alongside animals and rural crafts, the fair features a threshing re-enactment and convivial moments like the 'sdijuno', a traditional free meal offered to visitors. The most beloved symbol remains the parade of ox-drawn carts, festively decorated and accompanied by folk choirs, which travels through the historic center, bringing the area's agricultural customs back to life.

The 'Fondaci Aperti' and the Folk Festival

Throughout the event, the alleys come alive with the Fondaci Aperti: the ancient warehouses and workshops of the historic center open their doors to dozens of artisan exhibitors, food stalls serving Abruzzese specialties, live music, and entertainment for children, from late afternoon until evening. The evenings culminate with the Folk Festival in Piazza Duchi d'Acquaviva, which brings together choirs and traditional groups to celebrate folk singing.

The Celestinian Forgiveness and the Holy Door

The popular dimension is accompanied by a religious one: on the afternoon of August 14th, a Historical Pageant in costume parades through the city streets, preceding the solemn ceremony of opening the Holy Door of the Co-Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta. The ritual is linked to the Celestinian Forgiveness, the indulgence granted to the ducal city by Pope Celestine V, combining faith, devotion, and historical re-enactment in one of the most heartfelt moments of the Atri calendar.
