The ancient fire ritual on Christmas Eve, on Mount Amiata
In the heart of Mount Amiata, in Abbadia San Salvatore (Siena province, Tuscany), Christmas Eve literally lights up. The Christmas Torches is a millenary ritual that transforms the medieval village into a breathtaking landscape of fire every December 24th: over thirty massive woodpiles, built in pyramid shapes and standing up to seven meters tall, are ignited simultaneously across the historic districts. It is no coincidence that Abbadia San Salvatore is known throughout Italy as the "City of Torches".
The tradition has deep roots in antiquity, weaving together pagan and religious meanings: scholars and locals link it to winter solstice celebrations and the Roman rites of Sol Invictus, which were later Christianized around the Benedictine monastery founded in 742 AD, from which the town takes its name. The Torches thus celebrate the profound and unbreakable bond between humanity and nature, and the luminous anticipation of Christ's birth.
Preparation for the torches begins in autumn, when the fiaccolai (torch-bearers) start gathering wood in the Amiata forests. Building the piles requires special techniques passed down through generations: a meticulous task that brings together young and old in an exchange of knowledge that is a living tradition in itself. Each district of the historic center builds its own torch in a healthy and affectionate community competition.
On the evening of December 24th, at 6:00 PM, the intimate and spectacular first torch lighting ceremony takes place in front of the Town Hall, officially kicking off the festival. Following this, the more than thirty piles scattered throughout the village are lit one by one. Around 9:00 PM, the blessed singers, accompanied by musical instruments, walk through the district streets, stopping before each torch to perform traditional songs. Afterward, all that remains is to enjoy the wait for Christmas by gathering in the casottini (small huts) set up next to the torches, amidst mulled wine, sweets, and traditional anise biscuits, all within the magnetic setting of the fire-lit village.
The Torches are the heart of a broader calendar of Christmas festivities that animate Abbadia San Salvatore between December and Epiphany, featuring concerts, performances, artistic illuminations of the Abbey and Town Hall, and markets selling local products in the ancient cellars of the historic center. It is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating villages in Tuscany and the Amiata region during the most magical time of the year.
For 2026, the Christmas Torches return to light up Abbadia San Salvatore on Christmas Eve. The ritual follows the traditional format: lighting of the first torch at 6:00 PM in front of the Town Hall, followed by the lighting of the more than thirty woodpiles scattered throughout the historic center. The festival is part of the village's Christmas holiday calendar, which offers concerts and initiatives in the preceding days every year.
The Torches are the central moment of Abbadia San Salvatore's broader Christmas calendar, which features concerts, shows, and markets in the historic center in the days leading up to the event. The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including dates and guest performers, will be published by the Pro Loco and the municipal administration in the weeks preceding the holidays.
Abbadia San Salvatore is located on the slopes of Mount Amiata, in southern Tuscany (Siena province). By car, it can be reached via the SS2 Cassia or the SR2, taking the exit toward Mount Amiata; from Siena, it takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and from Rome or Florence, about 2 hours. The nearest train station is Chiusi-Chianciano-Chianciano Terme, which is connected by regional buses.
The ceremony takes place on the evening of December 24th, with the lighting of the first torch at 6:00 PM in front of the Town Hall.
The event takes place in the streets and squares of the historic center: participation is free and open to all. We recommend wearing very warm clothing (the Amiata area is cold and often snowy in December) and comfortable footwear.
