The patronal feast of Santa Fiora, on Mount Amiata
On July 29th, the municipality of Santa Fioraโan enchanting village in the province of Grosseto perched on the southern slopes of Mount Amiata, in Tuscanyโcomes to a standstill to honor its patron saints, Saints Flora and Lucilla. It is the most deeply felt civil and religious event in the town, a fixed appointment that draws locals, residents of the surrounding hamlets, and visitors to the heart of the ancient village every year.
The most solemn moment is the procession that carries the reliquary of the patron saints through the streets of the historic center. The religious pageant, which begins after mass, departs from the Pieve of Saints Flora and Lucilla in the late afternoon and is accompanied by the traditional Philharmonic and the Tamburini of Santa Fiora, who set the pace along the stone alleys of the village. It is an ancient rite, deeply linked to the identity of the Amiata community.
Alongside the religious aspect is the fair, one of the most typical in the Amiata region. Throughout the day, from the early morning hours until dinner time, vendors' stalls invade Piazza Garibaldi and the main streets of the historic center: local products, handicrafts, sweets, gifts, and tools bring to life a market with deep roots that remains one of the most beloved social gatherings in the town.
In recent years, the celebrations have been joined by the Palio delle Sante, which enriches the festival with a historical pageant in costume and an archery competition. The challenge pits the districts of the Santa Fiora territoryโSanta Fiora, Bagnolo, Bagnore, and Marronetoโagainst each other in a competition that evokes the medieval atmosphere of the village, concluding with a medieval dinner and fire shows.
Participating in the Feast of Saints Flora and Lucilla is also the perfect opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany: the Peschiera with its spring waters, the Romanesque Pieve with its Della Robbia terracotta works, the alleys of the Jewish quarter, and the fresh mountain air that makes Santa Fiora a popular destination even in the height of summer.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Saints Flora and Lucilla is celebrated on Wednesday, July 29th, in Santa Fiora, on Mount Amiata. The program follows the established tradition of the event.
In recent years, the festival has been enriched by the Palio delle Sante, featuring a historical pageant in costume and an archery competition between the districts of Santa Fiora, Bagnolo, Bagnore, and Marroneto. Detailed schedules and side events are published by the Municipality and the districts in the weeks leading up to the festival.
During the festival days, the Palio delle Sante also takes place (organized by the Contrada Santa Fiora), featuring a historical pageant in costume, an archery competition between the districts of Santa Fiora, Bagnolo, Bagnore, and Marroneto, a medieval dinner, and fire shows. Detailed times for the Palio are communicated by the organizers in the weeks prior.
Santa Fiora is located on Mount Amiata, in the province of Grosseto. By car, it can be reached via the SS2 Cassia or the SR74 Maremmana; the nearest train stations are Grosseto and Chiusi-Chianciano Terme, with onward connections by bus.
The festival takes place every year on July 29th. The procession and mass are held in the late afternoon (from 6:00 PM), while the fair occupies the streets of the center for the entire day.
The festival and fair are free and take place outdoors in the historic center. Reservations may be required for the side events of the Palio (such as the medieval dinner).
