Epiphany celebrations for children at the Villa Comunale in Melito di Napoli
In Melito di Napoli, the Epiphany is more than just the end of the Christmas break: it is a community festival designed for children. The Befana Village takes over the Villa Comunale on Via Lavinaio, the city's green heart, transforming it for a morning of color, music, and play. The organizers' goal is simple and deeply felt in this corner of the Neapolitan province: to keep the spirit of togetherness alive until the very last day of the festive season by offering families a safe, accessible place to gather.
The heart of the event is the musical parade with themed costumes, which travels through the park, involving children and adults in a festive atmosphere. The procession is accompanied by various entertainment activities: the distribution of gifts to the little onesโthe most anticipated symbolic gesture of the dayโand bouncy castles set up in the green spaces, designed to provide fun in a protected environment suitable for all ages.
The Befana Village is not an isolated event; it is part of 'Aggregazione Comune', a cultural program developed by the Municipality of Melito di Napoli with funding from the Metropolitan City of Naples as part of a broader metropolitan plan for culture, legality, and social cohesion. The calendar runs from the lighting of the Christmas tree in December through to spring, including the Santa Claus Village, a gospel concert, the 'A Book in the Library' literary series, and the Carnival Village. The Befana event serves as the ideal closing chapter for the Christmas portion of the program and the opening of the Carnival season.
In Campania, the Epiphany remains a key fixture in the calendar of popular festivals. The old woman who brings sweets and coal to children is the star of toy fairs, stocking markets, and parades throughout the Naples metropolitan area. Melito, a town of about thirty thousand inhabitants on the outskirts of the regional capital, interprets this tradition with a neighborhood-focused approach, creating a family-friendly event that avoids the need to travel to the center of Naples while showcasing a local public space.
The format chosen by the Municipality prioritizes accessibility: morning hours, free entry, and activities concentrated in a single, fenced-in space easily reachable on foot from the town center. It is an event perfectly suited for preschool and primary school children, though the parade and music appeal to all ages. For those visiting the area north of Naples in January, it is a great opportunity to see firsthand how the smaller towns of the Campania region celebrate the holidays, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
For the 2026 Epiphany, the Municipality of Melito di Napoli set up the Befana Village in the Villa Comunale on Via Lavinaio, open from 10 AM on Monday, January 5. The green space was transformed for the occasion into an area dedicated to play and entertainment for children and families.
The day opened with a musical parade with themed costumes, which traveled through the area, involving audiences of all ages. This was followed by entertainment, including the distribution of gifts to children and the use of the bouncy castles installed in the villa, designed to ensure fun in a safe and accessible environment.
The initiative, with free admission, was part of the 'Aggregazione Comune' project supported by the Metropolitan City of Naples, which accompanied the city from December 8, 2025, to March 2026 with a calendar of cultural and recreational events: from the lighting of the tree to the Santa Claus Village, and from the gospel concert to the subsequent Carnival Village.
Free admission, no reservation required, subject to capacity.
