Saint Alfonso Maria de' Liguori was born on September 27, 1696, in Marianella, in the villa that the de' Liguori family used as a country residence, now part of the northern outskirts of Naples, the capital of Campania. In this corner of the city, amidst narrow streets, surviving vegetable gardens, and modern apartment blocks, the neighborhood celebrates its patron saint every year with a festival that weaves together popular devotion, historical memory, and live performance.

September 27th, the day of his birth

Unlike many Neapolitan patronal feasts, the key date here is not the liturgical one, but the birth date: September 27th, the anniversary of the saint's birth. This choice speaks volumes about the bond between Marianella and Alfonso de' Liguori: he is not an adopted patron, but a local son who went on to become the Bishop of Sant'Agata de' Goti, founder of the Redemptorists, and a Doctor of the Church. The liturgical memorial falls on August 1st and is celebrated by the Redemptorist fathers at the Birthplace, with a triduum of preaching, solemn masses, and pilgrimages from neighboring parishes.

The evening on the square on Via Mugnano

The civil heart of the festival is the grand open-air evening hosted on the square on Via Mugnano, also known locally as Largo Mugnano: an ordinary space that transforms for one night into a neighborhood stage. The event is scheduled for 9:00 PM and admission is always free. People arrive early, find a seat wherever they can, and the square fills with families, groups of young people, and residents from nearby districts.

In 2026, the festival series reached its fourth edition, with 26 festivals distributed between June 1st and October 17th across all areas of the city. The project has grown rapidly: from 12 festivals and about 26,000 spectators at the beginning to 22 festivals and 50,000 attendees in the previous edition.

Marianella, the Birthplace, and the Redemptorists

Those arriving for the festival can take the opportunity to visit the Birthplace of Saint Alfonso, along the Borgo Alfonsiano: the ancient de' Liguori villa was purchased by the Redemptorists in 1880 and transformed into a place of memory, housing the chapel and rooms linked to the saint's birth. It is the spiritual reference point of the neighborhood and the reason why Marianella is a destination for Alfonsian pilgrimages from all over Southern Italy.
