The Befana Descends into the Square

In the heart of the Chieti province, at the foot of the Maiella mountains, the village of Guardiagrele hosts one of the most evocative Epiphany celebrations in Abruzzo every January 6th. In Piazza Maggiore, in front of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, both young and old look up toward the cathedral bell tower to witness a spectacle that repeats year after year: the Befana descending from above, rappelling down the bell tower to the amazement of the crowd.

A tradition blending celebration and courage

The secret behind this magic lies with the Fire Brigade, whose expertise ensures the safety of the entire operation. Dressed as the Befana, the old lady is skillfully lowered from the bell tower and, once she reaches the square, distributes over twenty kilos of candy to the many children who have gathered with their families. The event, traditionally held in the afternoon, transforms the historic center of Guardiagrele into a festive hub that perfectly concludes the Christmas period.

The setting for the event is no coincidence: Guardiagrele is listed among The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and is famous as the "city of stone" for its artisan traditions, ranging from master goldsmiths to wrought iron and copper workers. Attending the Befana's descent also means discovering a charming historic center, dominated by the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore and its imposing bell tower, the natural stage for the event.

An event for the whole family

The Befana Descends into the Square is designed primarily for children, but it engages the entire community of Guardiagrele and visitors from neighboring towns in the Chieti province and across Abruzzo. With applause, sweets, and the atmosphere of the final holidays of the year, the event has become a classic Epiphany tradition in the eastern Maiella area.
