Two days in the old town featuring Good Wheat, terracotta whistles, music, and local crafts
Some festivals capture the essence of a town better than any guidebook. Terraviva is one of them: in the old town of Rutigliano, in the province of Bari, the historic Good Wheat Festival intertwines with the Summer Edition of the Terracotta Whistle Fair. These two days highlight the community's two core identities: an ancient, highly nutritious wheat and the famous clay whistles, symbols of a craft passed down through generations.
The Rutigliano Good Wheat is an ancient cereal variety with high protein content, brought back to the table by those who rediscovered its value. During the festival, it is featured in over thirty recipes, alongside traditional Apulian dishes—from classic seasoned wheat to black chickpea recipes—in a culinary journey winding through the squares and characteristic alleys of the historic center. Stalls bring the village to life from the evening onwards, as the air fills with aromas and visitors stroll from one tasting to the next.
Rutigliano is known throughout Apulia as the home of the terracotta whistle, an ancient craft linked to clay working. With the Summer Edition of the Whistle Fair, master potters display their creations along the festival route, featuring vibrant colors and shapes ranging from good-luck roosters to elaborate figures. Alongside the workshops, artisan and antique markets complete the atmosphere, accompanied by temporary exhibitions, guided tours, and hands-on activities like the "Wooden Games" hosted by the Civic Archaeological Museum.
At night, the village becomes an open-air stage. The main squares—Piazza XX Settembre and Piazza Colamussi—host live concerts and performances, ranging from Apulian comedy to swing, ska, reggae, and rocksteady rhythms that ignite the evenings. It is the moment when the festival turns into a great community gathering, where residents and visitors mingle until late at night.
Organized by the Municipality of Rutigliano together with the Porta Nuova Cultural Association, Terraviva is much more than a food festival: it is the story of a land that preserves and passes on the value of its roots. In 2026, the Good Wheat Festival reaches its thirtieth edition, a milestone that confirms its role as one of the most anticipated summer events in the region, blending gastronomy, craftsmanship, culture, and entertainment within the timeless charm of the old town.
