The festival celebrating the sweet Red Onion, a Slow Food Presidium of the Alta Murgia
The Acquaviva delle Fonti Red Onion Festival is one of the most anticipated food and wine events of the summer in the province of Bari, Apulia. For two days, the town of Acquaviva delle Fonti celebrates its most iconic product: the Red Onion, a local variety with a sweet and delicate flavor, grown for generations in the countryside of the Alta Murgia and recognized as a Slow Food Presidium. The event, organized by the Pro Loco Curtomartino tourist association with the support of the Municipality and the Apulia Region, transforms the town center into a vibrant market of flavors, aromas, and music.
The heart of the festival is the Estramurale Pozzo Zuccaro, the wide boulevard that embraces the ancient center of Acquaviva, where food stalls and the concert stage are set up. Activities extend into the historic center, with its churches, noble palaces such as Palazzo de Mari, and the local Archaeological Museum, which are the highlights of evening guided tours.
The Red Onion of Acquaviva delle Fonti is distinguished by its flattened shape and intense purple color, but above all by the sweet taste that makes it suitable even for raw consumption. A symbol of Murgia agriculture, it gives its name to a festival that is both a popular fair, an opportunity to promote local products, and a moment of community for the residents of Acquaviva and the many visitors arriving from all over Apulia.
The event is free to attend. For the detailed program and schedules, it is recommended to follow the channels of the Pro Loco Curtomartino tourist association of Acquaviva delle Fonti.
