The celebration of traditional fresh pasta in Piazza XX Settembre, Rutigliano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Rutigliano Cavatello Festival is one of the most anticipated gastronomic events of the summer in the town of Rutigliano, in the province of Bari, in the heart of Puglia. Every year, in the charming setting of Piazza XX Settembre, the event celebrates the cavatello, the artisanal fresh pasta that represents one of the most authentic symbols of the local peasant culinary tradition.
The absolute star of the evening is the cavatello, a small, elongated, round-shaped durum wheat semolina pasta, obtained by pressing a small piece of dough with a finger to create the characteristic hollow that holds the sauce. Still prepared by hand according to the ancient wisdom of Apulian housewives, the cavatelli are cooked to order and served piping hot, dressed with various traditional sauces: from simple fresh tomato to the richer preparations of the local recipe book.
At the stalls set up in the square, residents and visitors can taste cavatelli accompanied by local wine and seasonal fruit, in a genuine and convivial atmosphere that recalls the long tables of popular festivals. The event offers free admission and showcases the local 'cucina povera', made of simple and genuine ingredients rooted in the agricultural identity of Rutigliano and all of Puglia.
The tasting is always accompanied by a rich program of live music, with concerts and shows that enliven the square until late at night. In recent editions, the festival has hosted orchestras and traditional Italian folk groups, transforming Piazza XX Settembre into a large open-air stage for an evening of singing, dancing, and shared joy.
The festival is organized by the Municipality of Rutigliano, through the Department of Culture and Tourism, together with the Committee for the Feasts of the Crucifix and Saint Nicholas, a historic local organization that has been managing events related to the town's religious and popular traditions for years. The event is part of the Municipality's summer calendar, offering residents and tourists visiting the province of Bari an authentic opportunity to discover the flavors and customs of Puglia.
The Rutigliano Cavatello Festival is expected to return for the summer of 2026 in Piazza XX Settembre, in the town of Rutigliano, province of Bari. The official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been communicated by the organizers. Following the trend of previous editions, which took place in August, the event is expected to once again offer tastings of fresh cavatelli with traditional sauces, along with local wine, seasonal fruit, and live music performances. The detailed program will be updated as soon as it is announced by the Municipality of Rutigliano and the Committee for the Feasts of the Crucifix and Saint Nicholas.
The festival is held in Piazza XX Settembre, in the center of Rutigliano (BA), 70018.
By car: Rutigliano can be reached from the SS16 highway, exiting towards Mola di Bari, or via the SP60 from Bari (approx. 25 km). By train: the Ferrovie del Sud Est line connects Rutigliano to Bari and Putignano. The nearest airport is Bari Karol Wojtyła, about 35 km away.
The event is free to attend. Tastings of cavatelli, wine, and fruit can be purchased at the stalls in the square.
The festival takes place in the evening: it is recommended to arrive early to find a seat and enjoy the tasting at a leisurely pace before the concerts begin.
