The devotional fair held on July 15th and 16th in the historic center of Turi
The Madonna del Carmine Market is the fair that accompanies the annual celebrations in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 15th and 16th in Turi, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari nestled on the Murgia plateau in the heart of Apulia. It is one of those festivals where the sacred and the secular intertwine: religious rites on one side, and stalls, illuminations, and festive cheer filling the historic center on the other.
During the two days of festivities, the town streets transform into a long open-air fair. Stalls occupy the roads around the Mother Church and sacred sites, offering a bit of everything: handicrafts and handmade goods, toys and sweets for children, nougat and baked goods, typical Apulian products, and gastronomic specialties, alongside the essential devotional items linked to the Madonna del Carmine. Strolling among the stalls, amidst the scent of toasted almonds and street food, is an integral part of the festival experience.
The market is inseparable from the religious festival. In Turi, the statue of the Madonna del Carmine is kept in the church of Santa Chiara and carried in procession by the Purgatory Confraternity: on July 15th, the statue travels through the town from Santa Chiara to the Mother Church, while on July 16th, the liturgical day of the feast, it returns in procession to Santa Chiara. A particularly moving moment is the passage of the statue through the main square, where the band plays Schubert's Ave Maria from the stage.
Like all great patronal and Marian festivals in the South, the Turi celebration features illuminations, brass band concerts, performances in the square, a traditional funfair, and, as a grand finale, fireworks that light up the Murgia sky. It is a time for the entire Turi community and the many visitors who flock to the town—famous for its renowned Ferrovia cherries—to come together.
The Madonna del Carmine Market is organized by the Municipality of Turi, which publishes an annual notice for the allocation of stalls to street vendors, ensuring the continuity of a tradition deeply rooted in the territory.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna del Carmine Market in Turi is officially scheduled for Wednesday, July 15th, and Thursday, July 16th, according to the public notice approved by the Municipality for participation in the fair. During these two days, the streets of the historic center will host stalls with handicrafts, local products, sweets, and devotional items, while the community gathers around the Madonna del Carmelo with traditional processions between Santa Chiara and the Mother Church.
The complete program of the 2026 festivities—including times for processions, performances in the square, and fireworks—has not yet been fully published and will be released by the Municipality of Turi and the parish in the weeks preceding the festival. Admission to the market is free.
Turi is located on the Murgia plateau, southeast of Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS100 Bari-Taranto road, taking the exit for Casamassima/Turi, or via the provincial roads of the Murgia towns. The nearest train station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est (Bari-Putignano line). The reference airport is Bari-Palese (Karol Wojtyła), located about 40 km away.
The market takes place on July 15th and 16th in the historic center. Stalls remain open all day; religious events (processions) and evening performances follow the schedule released by the parish and the Municipality in the days leading up to the festival.
Participation is free. As it is a very popular event, we recommend reaching the center on foot and parking in areas outside the pedestrian zone.
