The ancient village of Vairano Patenora travels back to the Middle Ages amidst torches, minstrels, and taverns
Some towns stop belonging to the present for two nights a year. Vairano Patenora, in the heart of the Alto Casertano, is one of them: when the August evening falls and torches are lit along the stone alleys, the ancient village transforms into an open-air medieval settlement. The Terra de Vajrani Medieval Festival is not a staged set in a square, but a journey through the real town, with its stairways, arches, portals, and houses huddled together.
The name of the event recalls the ancient form of the toponym, Vajrani, and clearly states its intent: not a generic costume show, but the story of a specific territory, the one that clings to the castle and the upper part of the municipality of Vairano Patenora, in the province of Caserta, Campania.
The 2026 edition takes place on Saturday, August 8th and Sunday, August 9th. On Saturday, the event opens at 7:00 PM with the inauguration of the stalls and the opening of the medieval route through the historic center; throughout the evening, performances by minstrels, jugglers, fire-eaters, archers, and flag-wavers take place. On Sunday, the village comes alive again starting at 6:00 PM with a new session of shows and performances.
The detailed program with the times of individual shows is released by the Pro Loco in the days leading up to the event via the official poster and the association's social media channels.
The formula of the Medieval Festival is one of immersion. Artists do not perform on a single stage: they move, stop in a small square, gather the audience, and move on. Visitors walk, get lost in the alleys, and encounter scenes one after another. In past editions, the route has hosted archery, armored combat demonstrations, falconry displays, historical pageants with period music, artisan craft stalls, and the inevitable fire shows that close the evening.
Alongside the shows, the taverns play a central role. They are the true convivial heart of the festival: you eat sitting at wooden tables, among the local people, with dishes that tell the story of the rural cuisine of the Caserta hinterland — grilled meats, legumes, local cheeses, traditional desserts — accompanied by local wines. It is the moment when the re-enactment stops being a show and simply becomes a village party.
The event was born in the early 2000s at the initiative of the Pro Loco Vairano Patenora, in a context linked to the enhancement and protection of the castle and the ancient village, which had long been neglected. Since then, the festival has grown edition after edition to become one of the most well-known re-enactment events in the province of Caserta, capable of attracting visitors from all over Campania and neighboring regions.
The credit largely goes to the volunteers: costumes, setups, taverns, and hospitality are handled by dozens of local volunteers who prepare the village for weeks before the two August evenings.
Vairano Patenora is located in the Alto Casertano, between the Volturno river and the slopes of the Matese massif, in a historical transit area between Campania and Molise. The ancient core, perched and distinct from the more modern hamlet of Vairano Scalo, preserves its medieval layout with walls, gates, and the remains of the castle that dominates the valley. It is precisely this intact urban structure that makes the re-enactment credible: there is no need to rebuild anything, just turn off the electric lights and light the torches.
The 2026 Terra de Vajrani Medieval Festival takes place over the weekend of August 8th and 9th, just before Ferragosto, when the town is at its summer peak. The medieval route winds through the historic center of Vairano Patenora, in the province of Caserta: stone alleys, small torchlit squares, craft stalls, and taverns set up in the village spaces.
On Saturday, the event starts at 7:00 PM with the official opening of the stalls; throughout the evening, performances by roaming artists — minstrels, jugglers, fire-eaters — take place alongside archers and flag-wavers. On Sunday, the opening is earlier at 6:00 PM, and the second day repeats the program of shows and performances.
The organization is handled by the Pro Loco Vairano Patenora, which publishes the poster with detailed times in the days immediately preceding the event.
By car: Take the Caianello exit on the A1 Milan-Naples motorway, then follow provincial roads towards Vairano Patenora (a few kilometers). From Naples and Caserta, take the SS 6 Casilina or the SS 372 Telesina.
By train: Vairano-Caianello station, on the Rome-Naples line via Cassino, located in the Vairano Scalo hamlet; the historic center is a few kilometers away and can be reached by car or taxi.
The ancient village is a restricted traffic zone during the event: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas at the foot of the historic center and walk up along the route, which is also the best way to soak up the festival atmosphere.
Opening on Saturday from 7:00 PM, Sunday from 6:00 PM. Shows continue until late at night.
