The theatre season bringing major productions to the Langhe and Monferrato hills
Nestled between the UNESCO-listed hills of the Langhe and the Bormida Valleys, the Teatro nelle Valli Bormida festival is one of the most established cultural fixtures in Piedmont's inland areas. The town of Cortemilia, in the province of Cuneo, serves as a primary hub: performances take place at the Nuovo Teatro Comunale on Via Alfieri 80, an intimate and welcoming venue that has been hosting local audiences for years.
The 2025/2026 season, titled 'Che spettacolo!', is promoted by the Fondazione Piemonte dal Vivo as part of the Corto Circuito project, with the support of the municipalities of Cortemilia, Monastero Bormida (province of Asti), and Spigno Monferrato (province of Alessandria), as well as the Cassa di Risparmio di Asti. It is a distributed programme spanning three theatres across three bordering provinces, designed to foster a network between the Langhe and Monferrato regions.
The programme blends various genres to appeal to all audiences:
The stages of the Bormida Valleys have hosted performers such as Andrea Bosca, Corrado Tedeschi, Serena Balivo, and Gian Luigi Carlone, founder of the Banda Osiris. The selection combines nationally acclaimed names with new productions, proving that great culture is not exclusive to major cities.
Attending a show in Cortemilia is also the perfect opportunity to discover the capital of the Piedmont Hazelnut PGI, a village in the Alta Langa crossed by the Bormida river, famous for its terraced hillsides and delicious hazelnut cake. The festival serves as a vital cultural anchor for this rural area, helping to keep community life vibrant throughout the winter months.
Promoted by the Fondazione Piemonte dal Vivo as part of the Corto Circuito project, the 2025/2026 season confirmed the festival's distributed format between the Langhe and Monferrato, with the support of the municipalities of Cortemilia, Monastero Bormida, and Spigno Monferrato, and the Cassa di Risparmio di Asti. The subscription campaign opened in early October 2025.
In Cortemilia, events were held at the Nuovo Teatro Comunale on Via Alfieri 80, with a programme that alternated between reimagined classics, comedy, storytelling, and music for families.
The festival also featured performances in other network theatres, including La catena with Andrea Bosca (October 18, 2025, season opening) and the national premiere of Cartone (November 9, 2025).
Among the most anticipated moments in Cortemilia: Partenza in salita with Corrado Tedeschi, the narrative concert Bibliotecari per un giorno with Gian Luigi Carlone of Banda Osiris, and Il borghese gentiluomo based on Molière in a contemporary reinterpretation by Compagnia Crack24.
Nuovo Teatro Comunale di Cortemilia, Via Vittorio Alfieri 80, 12074 Cortemilia (CN). Performances also take place at the Teatro Comunale in Monastero Bormida (AT) and the Teatro Franco Vasconi in Spigno Monferrato (AL).
By car: Cortemilia can be reached via the SP road that runs up the Bormida Valley; it is connected to Alba, Acqui Terme, and Savona. From Turin, it takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. The most convenient train stations are in Alba or Acqui Terme, from where you can continue by car or bus.
