Classic cars and motoring tourism through the wonders of the Gargano
The Targa di Capitanata is one of the most important historic motoring tourism events in Puglia. Every year, at the end of May, it attracts dozens of crews who bring perfectly preserved vintage cars—all ASI (Automotoclub Storico Italiano) certified—to the road for a three-day itinerary through the beauty of the Gargano promontory. Although it is a touring event that visits various municipalities in the province of Foggia, the event has one of its beating hearts in Mattinata, with its logistics base and ceremonies at the Baia dei Faraglioni.
The caravan crosses some of the most scenic spots in the Gargano: from Manfredonia with its technical inspections, to the beaches of Baia delle Zagare and Baia dei Faraglioni in the territory of Mattinata, all the way to Vieste, Peschici, and Pugnochiuso. There is also an immersion in the greenery of the Foresta Umbra, the lungs of the Gargano National Park, where the classic cars parade through ancient beech forests. The stages include static exhibitions in historic town centers, guided tours, and skill trials that test the precision of the crews.
The absolute stars are the ASI-certified historic vehicles, often open-top spiders and cabriolets, which are perfectly suited to the coastal landscapes of the Gargano. Over the years, the event has gained national and international reach, attracting crews from various Italian regions and enthusiasts from abroad, such as Greece and England.
The Targa di Capitanata is organized by the Autoclub Storico Dauno, an ASI-federated association based in Foggia, which has been committed for years to promoting historic motoring in the Capitanata area. The event enjoys the patronage of the Puglia Region and the Gargano municipalities involved in the route, including Peschici and Vieste. More than just a competition, the Targa is a celebration of automotive culture and slow tourism, capable of combining a passion for vintage engines with the discovery of the landscape and natural heritage of the Gargano.
The thirty-sixth edition of the Targa di Capitanata enlivened the Gargano from May 29 to 31, 2026, confirming itself as one of the reference events for historic motoring tourism in Puglia. 50 crews competed with ASI-certified historic vehicles, arriving from various Italian regions and even from abroad, with enthusiasts from Greece and England. The edition was held under the patronage of the Puglia Region and the municipalities of Peschici and Vieste.
The caravan crossed the most evocative stages of the promontory, based at the Baia dei Faraglioni in the territory of Mattinata, visiting Manfredonia, Baia delle Zagare, Vieste, the Foresta Umbra, Peschici, and Pugnochiuso, amidst static exhibitions, guided tours, and skill trials.
Mattinata and the Baia dei Faraglioni can be reached by car via the SS89 Garganica; the nearest motorway exit is Foggia (A14), then continue towards Manfredonia and Mattinata. The reference railway station is Foggia, which is well connected to the national network.
The event traditionally takes place on the last weekend of May, spread over three days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).
Registration is reserved for crews with ASI-certified historic vehicles and must be arranged with the Autoclub Storico Dauno. For the public, the static exhibitions in the historic centers of the Gargano are free to visit.
