Legambiente's festival for the South, set among the sacred sites of the Gargano
FestambienteSud is a major multidisciplinary festival organized by the Legambiente circle. For over twenty years, it has woven together world music, public debates, social theatre, excursions, and environmental education to celebrate the territories of Southern Italy. Born in the Gargano region, the festival finds one of its beating hearts in the Municipality of Monte Sant'Angelo, in the province of Foggia. Since 2018, Legambiente has managed the Green Cave on Via Garibaldi here, an underground cultural space serving as an organizational hub, bookstore, gallery, and workshop venue.
Monte Sant'Angelo, famous for the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, provides a unique backdrop for the festival. Concerts and meetings are held in symbolic locations such as Masseria Gambadoro in the Macchia area, the Abbey of Santa Maria di Pulsano, perched on the rocks above the ravines, and the squares of the historic center. Music thus dialogues with stone, spirituality, and landscape, creating an experience that combines listening, walking, and discovering the territory.
For several editions, FestambienteSud has dedicated its program to the African continent. The theme «Out of Africa – Desert, Oasis, and Caravans, at the climate's edge» guides a journey of sounds, words, and images that travels from the Sahara to the heart of Puglia, telling stories of desert cultures and reflecting on climate change, migration, and the encounter between peoples.
True to the spirit of Legambiente, the program in Monte Sant'Angelo complements concerts with seminars, forums on peace and biodiversity, sunset walks, and workshops. Many events are free, designed to involve residents and visitors in a model of sustainable culture that brings art, nature, and community into dialogue.
Part of a widespread festival that spans from the Itria Valley to the Gargano, the Monte Sant'Angelo stage represents one of the most intense moments of the event. Amidst thousand-year-old abbeys, historic farms, and the alleys of the village, the public can experience the most authentic Puglia: a land of sacred sites, traditions, and music that crosses the borders of the Mediterranean.
The twenty-second edition of FestambienteSud, titled «Out of Africa – Desert, Oasis, and Caravans», chooses Monte Sant'Angelo for three days of great world music, from July 24 to 26, 2026.
It opens on July 24 at Masseria Gambadoro, in the Macchia area, with the Afrofest focus and Moroccan DJ-producer Guedra Guedra, one of the most innovative names on the North African electronic scene. On July 25, the Abbey of Santa Maria di Pulsano hosts the Sufi spirituality of Nour Eddine, in a sunset concert that concludes a walk through the ravines. On July 26, in the historic center, Amira Kheir takes the stage, the «queen of the desert» of Sudanese origin who grew up in Turin.
Alongside the concerts, the Green Cave and the village locations host meetings, seminars, and moments of reflection on the climate and the encounter between cultures, in the environmentalist spirit of Legambiente.
Monte Sant'Angelo can be reached by car via the SS272 Gargano road; the reference train stations are San Severo and Foggia, which are connected by bus. The nearest airports are Bari-Palese and, in Molise, the connection via Termoli. Some concerts at the Abbey of Pulsano can be reached via a dedicated shuttle bus.
Many events are free; paid concerts have tickets available for purchase online via Vivaticket. Please check times and access methods on the official website, especially for events in locations with limited capacity.
