Traditional dance, music, and costumes from around the world in the Gargano region
Every summer, the historic center of Monte Sant'Angelo—a Gargano village in the Province of Foggia and home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites—hosts the International Folk Festival, one of the most cherished identity-focused events in the Gargano region. The festival gathers traditional dance and music groups from all over the world and various Italian regions, creating a meeting point that blends performance, folk memory, and intercultural exchange.
The history of the festival dates back to 1965, when Piazza Duca d'Aosta first began hosting international folk groups on its stage. The event is organized by the Gruppo Folk La Pacchianella, founded in 1923 and considered a true institution of Gargano folklore; its performers in traditional pacchiana costumes are the most authentic expression of Monte Sant'Angelo's popular culture. After a hiatus, the festival has returned as a highlight of the local summer, bringing colors, music, and dances from around the world back to the square.
The heart of the festival lies in the evenings at Piazza Duca d'Aosta, where guest groups perform dances, songs, and choreographies from their homelands. Each evening, before the shows, the historic center is filled with the evocative procession of caparisoned mules, which travels along via Gambadoro, Corso Garibaldi, Piazza Beneficenza, and Corso Reale Basilica, recalling the ancient farming traditions of the Gargano. The costumes, live music, and dance steps transform the village into an open-air theater.
The festival is more than just entertainment: it is a moment of dialogue between peoples, where foreign delegations and Italian groups share repertoires, costumes, and traditions. Over the years, the square has hosted ensembles from Latin America, the Caucasus, and Europe, alongside groups from Puglia. For Monte Sant'Angelo, a pilgrimage destination linked to the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, the festival is also an opportunity to showcase the intangible heritage of the Gargano.
Included in the summer calendar of the Municipality of Monte Sant'Angelo, the International Folk Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the season, attracting residents, tourists, and folk tradition enthusiasts from all over Puglia. It is a free, open-air event, perfect for experiencing the authentic atmosphere of Gargano folklore.
The Monte Sant'Angelo International Folk Festival returns from August 6 to 8, 2026, as indicated in the official events calendar of the Municipality of Monte Sant'Angelo (Province of Foggia, Puglia). For three evenings, Piazza Duca d'Aosta will host performances by traditional dance and music groups, accompanied by the characteristic parades through the historic center organized by the Gruppo Folk La Pacchianella.
The dates are confirmed, while the full program and the list of participating groups have not yet been published: they will be communicated by the organizers closer to the event.
Performances take place in Piazza Duca d'Aosta, in the historic center of Monte Sant'Angelo (FG), with parades along via Gambadoro, Corso Garibaldi, Piazza Beneficenza, and Corso Reale Basilica.
By car: Monte Sant'Angelo can be reached via the SS89 Garganica; it is approximately 55 km from Foggia. The nearest train station is in Foggia, with bus connections to the Gargano area.
Free open-air event. Evening performances generally start at 8:00 PM.
