A festival in the heart of Ciociaria

The Tagliariegli e Fagioli Festival is the most anticipated gastronomic event of the summer in San Vittore del Lazio, a small town in the province of Frosinone on the southern border of Lazio. The official Ciociaria tourism portal lists it as a recurring local celebration, traditionally held on the first Saturday of July: an evening where the village fills with long tables, the aromas of home cooking, and music, following the classic ritual of lower Lazio village festivals.

The dish: tagliariegli with beans

The absolute star of the festival is a simple, ancient dish: tagliariegli, the local dialect name for fresh, handmade eggless pasta, kneaded with water and flour and cut by hand, served with beans in a thick, flavorful soup. It is the local version of the traditional peasant pasta and beans, a dish of memory that San Vittore families once prepared for feast days and which the festival has transformed into a symbol of the town's identity. Alongside the main dish, as is customary at Ciociaria festivals, there is no shortage of local products and regional wine.

The village celebration

The festival takes place throughout the streets and squares of the historic center, a medieval village—the first core of which dates back to the 11th century—perched at an altitude of 210 meters on a hill overlooking the final stretch of the Liri Valley. The format is that of a genuine village fair: food stalls run by volunteers, outdoor seating, folk music, and dancing until late. It is the perfect opportunity to discover a corner of authentic Ciociaria, far from the most beaten tourist paths.

San Vittore del Lazio, a borderland

The territory of the Municipality of San Vittore del Lazio occupies a unique position: it is the last town in Lazio before reaching Campania, at the meeting point of three regions—Lazio, Campania, and Molise. This frontier location has marked its history, from medieval events linked to the nearby Abbey of Montecassino to the dramatic battles of the Second World War, when the town found itself on the Cassino front line. Today, San Vittore is a quiet village, easily accessible via its dedicated exit on the A1 motorway, which serves as one of the gateways to Ciociaria for those arriving from the south in the Lazio Region.

The July festival is part of a calendar of events that marks the San Vittore year:

• Feast of San Vittore, the patron saint, on May 8th;
• Accordion Festival, the last Sunday of May;
• Cheese Festival, the third Saturday of July, two weeks after the tagliariegli festival;
• Livestock Fair, September 19th.

Those in the area in July can therefore combine two festivals in the same month, both dedicated to traditional flavors.
