The patron saint festival in the Aurunci village of Ausonia

In the heart of Ciociaria, at the foot of the Aurunci Mountains, the small town of Ausonia (in the province of Frosinone, Lazio) celebrates its patron saint every year with the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel. On September 29th, the day dedicated to Archangel Michael in the liturgical calendar, the village gathers around its oldest and most deeply felt religious tradition, in an event that weaves together popular faith, music, and gastronomy.
Saint Michael the Archangel has been the protector of Ausonia for centuries: his church dominates the upper part of the town, overlooking the Aurunci landscape, while further down in the valley stands the famous Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Piano, one of the most precious places of worship in the area. Devotion to the Archangel is rooted in the long history of the village, a borderland between Lazio and Campania, and a guardian of a heritage made of stone, art, and peasant memory.
The most solemn moment of the festival is the Holy Mass celebrated in the parish church, followed by the procession that accompanies the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel through the streets of the historic center. The pageant, enlivened by the brass band and the faithful, crosses the village in an atmosphere of contemplation and participation that involves the entire community, along with the many Ausonians who return to their hometown for this occasion.
Alongside the religious appointments, the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel offers a rich calendar of popular initiatives:
The combination of sacred rite and street festival captures the authentic atmosphere of the patronal feasts of southern Lazio, where the sense of community belonging is renewed year after year.
The festival is also an excellent opportunity to visit Ausonia and its surroundings: the historic center with the church of Saint Michael, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Piano with its Gothic portico, and the evocative views of the Monti Aurunci Park. An ideal destination for those seeking the authentic Ciociaria, far from the main tourist flows, amidst tradition, spirituality, and hospitality.
