The magic of Christmas in the village at the foot of Mount Partenio, featuring St. Nicholas bonfires, music, and Irpinian traditions
Summonte: Stars and Bonfires is the festival that accompanies the entire holiday season in the small village of Summonte, in the province of Avellino, in the heart of Irpinia and Campania. Promoted by the Municipality of Summonte together with the Pro Loco Submontis and local associations, it runs from the beginning of December until January 6th, transforming the town's squares, churches, and monuments into stages.
The title perfectly captures the spirit of the event: on one hand, the stars, those of the clear Campanian Apennine sky observed from the Angevin Tower; on the other, the bonfires, the fires lit in the square that have always marked the beginning of winter and brought the community together in shared warmth.
The festival opens on December 6th, the feast day of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of Summonte. It is on this date that the bonfires are lit in Piazza Antonio De Vito, featuring live music and the traditional braciata (grilled meat feast) hosted by the Pro Loco. The ritual, suspended between devotion and village celebration, unites the patronal feast with the Christmas calendar: the saint's day is not a standalone event, but the gateway to the entire month of appointments that follows.
Families, children, and visitors gather around the fire: it is the most defining moment of the entire festival, where the bond between the village and its rural roots becomes most evident.
The program changes every year but follows a recognizable structure, with events spread over about fifteen dates and dozens of appointments. Among the most used venues:
The programming is deliberately multidisciplinary. Recent editions have featured Irpinian polyphonic choirs, saxophone quartets from the Domenico Cimarosa Conservatory of Avellino, Christmas carol concerts with harp, flute, and solo voice, amateur and professional theater companies, comedy shows, musical tombolas, animated readings for children, and storytelling evenings dedicated to Neapolitan culture.
Folk music is also a staple: the Irpinian Bagpipe School is a regular guest at the bonfire evening, with a repertoire of zampogne and ciaramelle that has accompanied the Christmas novenas of the southern Apennines for centuries.
Every evening is accompanied by tastings of local products: chestnuts, cured meats, and cheeses from the Partenio area, holiday sweets, and local wine. The braciata on December 6th remains the most anticipated gastronomic event, but throughout the month, food and wine stands, themed tastings, and dinners organized by local associations follow one another.
With just over 1,500 inhabitants, Summonte is one of the most picturesque villages in Irpinia. The town is dominated by the Angevin Tower, a cylindrical tower about 30 meters high built between the 12th and 13th centuries, now open to visitors and flanked by the Castellare complex and the Civic Museum. From the top, the view sweeps over the Sabato valley and the Partenio massif, a protected area of great naturalistic value. In winter, the village, illuminated and animated by the festival, becomes an ideal destination for a short trip from Avellino or Naples.
The 2025/2026 edition of the Christmas festival in Summonte confirmed its well-established formula: a widespread calendar, distributed throughout the holiday period, with free events designed for families, children, and visiting tourists.
The kickoff took place on Saturday, December 6, 2025, the day of the patron saint St. Nicholas, with bonfires lit in Piazza Antonio De Vito, the Pro Loco Submontis' grilled meat feast, and the bagpipes of the Irpinian Bagpipe School. Over the following two days, the Don Alberto De Simone Congress Center hosted amateur theater and the Immaculate Conception concert.
The rest of the program alternated Neapolitan comedy, flamenco dance, tombolas, shows for children, and the evocative astronomical observation dinner organized at the foot of the Angevin Tower on January 3rd. The closing, on Epiphany, was entrusted to a puppet show dedicated to the Befana.
As per tradition, all events were promoted by the Municipal Administration of Summonte together with the Pro Loco Submontis and local associations, with free admission.
The historic center hosted lights, nativity scenes, and Christmas decorations throughout the period.
By car: take the Avellino Ovest exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, then the SS 374 towards Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo/Montevergine, about 10 km from Avellino. By train: Avellino station, then local bus lines to Summonte. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about 60 km away.
Free parking areas are available at the entrance to the town; on busier evenings, it is advisable to arrive early, as the historic center is largely pedestrianized.
Almost all events are free of charge. For some theatrical performances and dinners under the stars, reservations may be required: details are published periodically on the Municipality of Summonte website and the Pro Loco Submontis channels.
You will spend a lot of time outdoors and the altitude exceeds 700 meters: heavy winter clothing and comfortable shoes are essential. Combine your visit with the Sanctuary of Montevergine, just a few kilometers away.
